Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The simplest form of engineered trench, or shallow land burial, relies mainly on the properties of the excavated overburden and the geohydrologic properties of the site for containment. The intent is to ensure that the travel time of radionuclides from the waste to the human environment via groundwater is long compared to the nuclide half lives. Travel time is long because of low hydraulic gradients, soils of low water permeability and high contaminant adsorption, and lengthy pathways across exclusion zones. 4, record 8, English, - trench
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Illustration of a shallow land burial facility (engineered trench). ... Figure 9 outlines the engineered trench option. In this option, the major characteristics are that: . wastes are placed below grade (in suitable hydrogeological conditions) in trenches having a specially prepared bottom that incorporates a drainage system; . there is an earthen cover over the wastes that easily can incorporate additional engineered barriers; . structural stability is not provided by the disposal facility; and . for structural stability, voids between the waste containers are filled with sans or earthen materials - bulk wastes may be compacted. 5, record 8, English, - trench
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 3 CONT
Shallow-land burial in trenches was the original low-level waste disposal practice at the beginning of the nuclear era. The method originally consisted in emplacing the wastes in trenches dug into the ground at depths ranging from 3 to 6 m and covering the emplaced wastes with about 1 m of soil. 1, record 8, English, - trench
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 4 CONT
Burial trenches without additional engineered barriers can be used provided that radionuclides will migrate into groundwater beneath the site at an acceptable rate. 1, record 8, English, - trench
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 OBS
As used in this context, the word "engineered" refers to the fact that features and materials have been designed or selected to accomplish certain functions. In shallow land burial the materials are usually natural rather than man-made. 4, record 8, English, - trench

Planned permanent placement of radioactive material with no intention of recovery. 7, record 10, English, - disposal
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Disposal is a permanent method of management in which there is no intention of retrieval and which, ideally, does not rely for its success on the continued need for institutional controls beyond a reasonable period of time. Disposal would be achieved when the wastes are sufficiently isolated by natural or engineered passive containment, or sufficiently reduced in concentration by radioactive decay or dispersal, that the residual risks to human beings and the environment are acceptable. 3, record 10, English, - disposal
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Permanent disposal means sequestering the wastes, until they have decayed to a safe level, away from the environment in a permanent facility requiring no monitoring, maintenance, or ongoing institutional controls. ... One unfortunate aspect of the Board’s adherence to this idea is the inhibiting effect it has on the search for simpler solutions, such as long-term storage, that concentrate on improved management of the wastes. 3, record 10, English, - disposal
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The debate essentially concerns the distinction between storage and disposal. "Storage" involves the retrievability, monitoring, and ongoing institutional control of wastes. It also includes active elements of waste management in such a waste facility (e.g., leachate collection and treatment). By contrast, the concept of disposal assumes that a waste management facility can be designed in such a way that there will be no need for such measures. 3, record 10, English, - disposal

Resource recovery. Waste management is structured according to the Five R's Hierarchy : Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, Residual Management.... According to policies laid out in the Regional Solid Waste Management Plan, the RDKB provides recycling programs, transfer stations, landfills, and education on Reduce and Reuse opportunities.... Reduce is the highest priority in the waste management hierarchy. Waste reduction is defined as decreasing the quantity and toxicity of material that is generated and then thrown away.... For example, buying bulk foods and items with less packaging reduces waste.... Reuse is... defined as the repeated use of a product in the same form, but not necessarily for the same purpose, [for example :] use margarine containers for the kids lunch. Recycle is... defined as the source separation of products and materials from the solid waste stream that are no longer useable in their present form, and the use of their material content in the manufacture of new products. This includes composting.... Recover is... defined as the reclamation of energy or recyclable materials from the waste stream by incineration or another method other than composting.... Residual Management(Landfills and Transfer stations) is... defined as the disposal of the waste remaining after the application of the other four R's. 3, record 15, English, - five%20R%27s

The WAF has been developed by signatories to the London Convention, 1972, including Canada. It has two main features. First, it places new emphasis on progressively reducing the need to use oceans for waste disposal. This is consistent with the principle of pollution prevention and the goal of waste reduction advanced by the Government of Canada and in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Secondly, it provides a scheme to integrate into a single process many factors for determining whether or not ocean disposal is the environmentally preferable and practical method for waste disposal. Many of the items that form part of the WAF scheme already appear in provisions of the current CEPA and in the current Ocean Dumping Regulations. 1, record 23, English, - Waste%20Assessment%20Framework

1, record 23, French, - Cadre%20d%27%C3%A9valuation%20des%20d%C3%A9chets

Two types of balances have been prepared from the data compiled on hog farming operations in Quebec. These balances are based essentially on the fact that the only method of manure disposal available to Quebec' s hog farmers, is, in practice, application to agricultural lands. The first balance thus reflects the environmental pressure which the hog industry places on these lands, that is, the animal load per hectare of crop land. The second is an agronomic balance for organic fertilizers on the farm solely on lands cultivated by the operations; mineral fertilizers are not considered. 2, record 25, English, - manure%20disposal

To prevent pollution of the public water supply, the disposal of spent sulfite liquor into rivers is, in many cases, forbidden. The only solution possible is to evaporate it or even to dry it out completely.... The back-pressure process is notable for its great heat economy, but it makes necessary the profitable utilization of the back-pressure steam.... Because of the high temperatures during the evaporation process, thermal decomposition of the liquor may occur.... The thermal compression method is especially advantageous when cheap power is available. The steam formed during the evaporation is compressed and passed along the outer wall of the evaporator where it is condensed and its latent heat transferred to the boiling liquor. 1, record 39, English, - back%2Dpressure%20process
