The cross-entropy method(CEM) is a probabilistic optimization technique that iteratively fits an initial distribution to elite samples. The method uses importance sampling, which introduces a proposal distribution over rare events to sample from then re-weights the posterior likelihood by the likelihood ratio of the true distribution... over the proposal distribution. The idea is to artificially make failure events less rare under the newly fit proposal distribution. 4, record 2, English, - cross%2Dentropy%20method

2, record 2, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20de%20l%27entropie%20crois%C3%A9e

Simulated annealing is a method for solving unconstrained and bound-constrained optimization problems. The method models the physical process of heating a material and then slowly lowering the temperature to decrease defects, thus minimizing the system energy. At each iteration of the simulated annealing algorithm, a new point is randomly generated. The distance of the new point from the current point, or the extent of the search, is based on a probability distribution with a scale proportional to the temperature. 1, record 5, English, - simulated%20annealing%20algorithm

Bayesian analysis uses Bayes’ theorem to update the prior probability distribution in light of the results of a study, in order to produce a posterior distribution. It can be used in a single study or in a meta-analysis. Statistical inference (point estimates, confidence intervals, etc.) is based on the posterior distribution. The posterior distribution can also be used as the prior distribution for the next study. This approach is controversial when it depends on opinions, which may vary. However, its use has become commonplace in economic evaluation, as it allows the creation of complex models with different evidence sources and the determination of uncertainty. 2, record 24, English, - Bayesian%20analysis

1, record 24, French, - analyse%20bay%C3%A9sienne

Electrophoresis in a stabilised pH gradient. High-resolution method for separating molecules, especially proteins, which carry both positive and negative charges. Molecules migrate to the pH corresponding to their isoelectric point. 2, record 30, French, - %C3%A9lectrofocalisation

Because elements that are close to each other in the Periodic Table differ considerably in their neutron-scattering ability, neutron diffraction is capable of distinguishing between them. For example, carbon nitrogen, and oxygen atoms can be readily identified by neutron diffraction, where as they appear almost identical by the x-ray method. More accurate determination of the bond lengths of light atoms and distribution of molecular bonding electrons is also possible. Details of molecular structure that can only be inferred by other techniques can often be observed directly by neutron diffraction. Investigations using this method include hydrogen bonding, so-called metal cluster compounds(C. H. M relationships) and electronic charge distributions. 2, record 39, English, - neutron%20diffraction

Determination of the effective opening size, dw, FIH. The effective opening size of a geotextile, dw, is determined by wet sieving quartz sand of known composition using modified sieving equipment. The geotextile functions as a sieve .... The test sample, (diameter 18 cm), is clamped into a sieve frame. The sand, which has a dry weight of 100 g for wovens and a dry weight of 300 g for non-wovens, is then sprinkled onto the sample. The sand is then sprayed continuously with water and sieved for 15 minutes in a modified sieve machine with a vertical amplitude of 3 mm at a frequency of 50 Hz. The sand which passes through the geotextile sample is caught on a paper filter and then analyzed with [different sieves] .... Method of irrigation which consists of spilling water at frequent intervals from a grade ditch constructed along the high edge of a sloping field. The water is allowed to flow freely down the slope, irrigating the soils the water moves across. Interceptor ditches are placed at intervals down the slopes to collect the water. When the valve is open, the melting or plasticizing cylinder pushes the material into the nozzle end of the pot, forcing the plunger back. When the plunger moves back an experimentally predetermined distance, the filling stops and the valve is closed, because the backward motion of the plunger actuates a limit switch. At the appropriate time in the cycle the material is injected into the mold from the second cylinder, the so-called shooting cylinder or pot. This method of operation gives much better mixing of the plastic, more even temperature distribution, and better control of speed, pressure, and the amount of material. This type machine is called a preplasticizing machine. 2, record 55, English, - preplasticizing%20press

Fiber Length. Traditionally, the fiber length distribution or weighted average fiber length of a pulp sample has been determined either by microscopic examination of a representative number of fibers, by means of a special drainage grid, or by screen classification of a sample into different length fractions.... In the classification method, a dilute suspension of fibers is made to flow at high velocity parallel to screen slots, while a much slower velocity passes through the slots. In this way, the fibers are presented lengthwise to a series of selected screens with successively smaller mesh openings, and only the fibers short enough to bridge the openings pass into the next chamber. The pulp sample is typically divided into five length fractions. 1, record 59, English, - classification%20method

The gel entrapment method involves entrapping of the enzymes within the interstitial spaces of crosslinked water insoluble polymer gels.... The usual method of gel formation is to polymerize acrylamide in an aqueous solution of the soluble enzyme and a crosslinking agent such as N, N-methylenebis(acrylamide). The resulting gel block can be mechanically dispersed into particles of desired size. The broad distribution of pore size of the gel inevitably results in leakage of the entrapped enzyme even after prolonged washing whilst the generation of free radicals in the course of the reaction may affect the activity of the entrapped enzymes. 1, record 69, English, - gel%20entrapment
