[A butterfly of approximately] 3. 75-4. 5 inches [in length]. Range : western Ontario, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, through central Florida and Gulf States of the U. S. Appearance : great seasonal variation. In the Spring, specimens are small, with short wings, short tails, and restricted dark and extensive light markings. Later spring specimens are larger with longer wings and darker markings with more white on the tail-tips. Larvae are cannibalistic with a pea green appearance interspersed with narrow yellow and black crossbands.

There are several genera in the Papilionidae family of butterflies, including Limenitis, Vanessa, Nymphalis, Polygonia and Papilio. Moreover, all swallowtails (common name for the P. family) belong to the Papilionidae family, but not all species with names starting with the Latin "Papilio" (Latin generic name for a genus within the family) are necessarily zebra swallowtails (common name for one species within the Papilio genus).

In the Latin name "Papilio marcellus Cramer", "Papilio" is the name of the genus and is always capitalized. The Port Meteorological Officer(PMO) is responsible for marine data acquisition and is a liaison between the National Weather Service and marine interests. The PMO's liaison duties provide a communication link between the NWS and marine interests from Lake St. Clair east through Lake Ontario, including Lake Erie. The PMO is also the marine liaison to federal, state and local government agencies including : the U. S. Coast Guard, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and Department of Natural Resources officials from southeastern Michigan, Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania and western New York.

In march 0f 1985, an Indian Fishing Agreement was reached that did much to diffuse an explosive fishing conflict in waters governed by the treaty of 1836. The tribes agreed to concentrate their commercial fishing in the extreme northern parts of Lake Michigan and Huron and in eastern Lake Superior in exchange for exclusive commercial rights there, which left the rest of the lakes available to the important sport fishery and state-licensed commercial fishermen.
