Dichos caracteres son legibles, no sólo por la máquina, sino también por el hombre y pueden consistir en dígitos, letras u otros símbolos. La tinta contiene una substancia magnética que se magnetiza al insertarse el documento en la máquina permitiendo que cada carácter sea detectado por las cabezas de lectura.
