Disinfection process, mainly with chlorine, to prevent microbiological contamination of water can lead to the formation of hazardous disinfection by-products(DBPs) due to the reaction of chlorine with natural organic matter(NOM) present in the water.... Beyond specific health based thresholds, DBPs can represent a public health issue due to the potential chronic risk of adverse effects on human health(e. g., cancer, reproductive and developmental effects) and the high prevalence of exposure. Thus, DBPs constitute an important concern for water systems, especially systems supplied by surface waters.... Recently, a technique known as differential UV [ultraviolet] absorbance(DUVA) has been developed that could provide a sensitive and highly specific indicator for DBP formation resulting from chlorination. 2, record 1, English, - differential%20UV%20absorbance

2, record 1, French, - diff%C3%A9rentiel%20d%27absorbance%20UV

A medium containing peptone, lactose, dipotassium phosphate, agar, sodium sulfite, basic fuchsin, and distilled water. Originally developed for the isolation of Salmonella typhi, this medium is now most useful in the bacteriologic examination of water. Coliform organisms [namely Escherichia coli] ferment the lactose and their colonies become red and stain the surrounding medium [whereas] non-lactose-fermenting organisms [namely Salmonella sp.] produce clear, colorless colonies against the faint pink background of the medium. 3, record 2, English, - Endo%20agar

Oil slick dispersants. When oil... is treated with a suitable surface active agent and agitation applied, the oil is broken up into particles... so small that they constitute an oil-in-water emulsion... Dispersants serve to increase the surface area of an oil spill and disperse oil globules throughout the layer volume water. This causes an accelerated degradation of oil by microbiological action. 7, record 18, English, - dispersant
Record number: 18, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The chemicals used to disperse the oil are emulsifiers. Although a chemist would never confuse the terms dispersant and emulsifier, the former designating a product which encourages the distribution of finely divided solids in a fluid, either liquid or gas, the latter referring to a product which encourages the colloidal dispersion of one liquid in another, the terms are synonymous in the field of oil pollution control. This is explained by the following sentence taken from "The Control of oil pollution on the sea and inland waters", edited by J. Wardley-Smith (source COCOB): "It was found ... [that the product] when sprayed on to the oil, effectively softened and dispersed it by means of emulsification ..." The dispersion is accomplished by products which emulsify the oil, i.e., emulsifiers. Dispersion is used in its general sense and hence dispersant simply means a product that causes spreading. Also dispersant is used more frequently than emulsifier. 8, record 18, English, - dispersant

During fermentation organic matter is decomposed in the absence of air(oxygen) ;hence, there is always an accumulation of reduction products, or incomplete oxidation products.... There are also many microbiological processes that go on in the presence of air while yielding incomplete oxidation products.

1, record 41, French, - vidange%20des%20fosses%20septiques

Biological clogging is the result of chemical and microbiological deposition of humus and iron compounds in and around the pipe drain.... biochemical clogging(however, partly mineral), occurs in most peat soils when a too densely structured envelope is used.
