MICROCAPSULE [5 records]

Record 1 2013-09-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Molecular Biology
DEF

The localization of two or more enzymes at the same time and in the same micro-vicinity.

OBS

[Simultaneous immobilization] may be achieved by such means as covalent bonding of the enzymes to the same functionalized polymer or by entrapment of the catalysts within the same microspace of a crosslinked polymer, microcapsule, or membrane-dependent device.

DEF

Procedure, based on the liquid surfactant membrane concept, for providing immobilized enzymes within a nonpermanent microcapsule. Enzyme immobilization is brought about by emulsifying an aqueous enzyme solution with a surfactant to form the liquid membrane encapsulated enzymes.

OBS

The major advantages of this procedure are the nonchemical nature of the method and its reversibility of immobilization. However, the possibility of loss of enzyme by diffusion, and the same diffusion phenomenon controlling passage of substrates and products through the liquid membrane via a solubility mechanism rather than size exclusion mechanism, can be a disadvantage.

DEF

DEF

Phenomenon of phase separation in polymer solutions. The formation of a microcapsule is dependent on the lower solubility of the polymer at the interface of a microdroplet. It is a physical phenomenon and has been employed for the preparation of semipermeable microcapsules used for immobilizing enzymes.

CONT

One purification method for polymers involves dissolving the polymer in an organic solvent and reprecipitating it by adding another organic solvent which is miscible with the first but which does not dissolve the polymer. In this treatment, if the temperature and the amount of organic solvent added are varied, the polymer solution can be separated into two phases containing low and high concentrations of polymer.... This ... phase separation method for microencapsulation is an application of coacervation.

DEF

As microcapsule carriers of drugs and biological products, liposomes effectively target drugs to specific sites, reduce toxicity in drugs, increase effectiveness in vaccines, and serve as carriers for artificial blood.

CONT

(The Lancet, 15 mai 1993).
