MICROGRAVITY ACCELERATION MEASUREMENT SYSTEM [5 records]

Record 1 2002-11-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Space Physics
CONT

The ISS microgravity acceleration environment consists of two regimes : the quasi-steady environment and the vibratory/transient environment; therefore, the measurement of the microgravity acceleration environment is best accomplished by two accelerometer systems. In the United States Laboratory Module, the measurement of these two regimes is accomplished by the Space Acceleration Measurement System-II(SAMS-II) and the Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System(MAMS). The vibratory/transient environment, consisting of vehicle, crew, and equipment disturbances and covering the frequency range 0. 01-300 Hz, will be measured by the SAMS-II.

CONT

To complement the SAMS-II measurements, the Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System(MAMS) will record accelerations caused by the aerodynamic drag created as the Space Station moves through space. It also will measure accelerations created as the vehicle rotates and vents water. These small, quasi-steady accelerations occur in the frequency range below 1 Hertz.

OBS

microgravity acceleration measurement system; MAMS : term and abbreviation officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group(ISSOAG).

Domaine(s)
  • Stations orbitales
CONT

CONT

The objective of the Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System(MAMS) is to measure and report vibratory and quasi-steady acceleration within the United States Laboratory Module on the International Space Station. Vibratory acceleration, produced by mechanical equipment and crew activity, has an oscillatory nature with a frequency greater than 1 Hz.

CONT

... the Microgravity Mode ensures that ... the vibratory acceleration levels will not be exceeded for 50% of the International Standard Payload Rack locations within the European Columbus, Destiny and Japanese Kibo laboratories for at least 30 days continuously, on six occasions each year.

OBS

vibratory acceleration: term officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group (ISSOAG).

CONT

The SAMS-II [Space Acceleration Measurement System] capability provides an acceleration measurement system serving the needs of microgravity science experiments on ISS [International Space Station]. It provides data supporting experiments that are affected by local accelerations and contributes to the characterization of the ISS environment. The system consists of a control unit(providing control, data recording, analysis and downlink), remote triaxial sensors(measuring experiment-specific locations chosen by the users), and ground operations equipment(serving as the gateway enabling investigators to command and control measurements).
