The Microgravity Science Glovebox(MSG) is a joint development project between NASA and the European Space Agency(ESA). The double rack unit is a versatile research facility designed to permit the flexibility of crew-manipulated investigations. Its configuration has been planned around the concept of an experimental workstation where a variety of experiments can be installed and operated in a fashion very similar to their operation in a ground-based laboratory.... Specifically, the facility provides a large enclosed work volume, power, video, photography, vacuum connections, heat rejection, stowage, filtered air, gaseous nitrogen, lighting, airlock access, physical positioning and hold-down attachments, and computer data acquisition and control capabilities. 3, record 3, English, - microgravity%20science%20glovebox

The MSG [Microgravity Science Glovebox] is a containment facility designed for supporting a wide range of microgravity science investigations and demonstrations. In the sealed mode, the MSG serves as a single level of containment by providing a physical barrier. In the air circulation mode the MSG serves as a one failure tolerant containment by providing a physical barrier and a negative pressure relative to the cabin. The MSG further facilitates investigations by providing many of the resources that are typically used by microgravity science investigations. 4, record 3, English, - microgravity%20science%20glovebox

2, record 7, French, - dispositif%20gouttes%2C%20bulles%20et%20particules

[The] MVIS(Microgravity Vibration Isolation Subsystem)... consists of a distributed set of large gap Lorentz force actuators, with permanent magnets mounted on the FCE [Facility Core Element] and voice coils attached to the ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack]. Three accelerometer assemblies are also mounted on the FCE, housing three accelerometers each. This allows determination of both the linear accelerations and the rotational acceleration of the FCE, and allows for up to three levels of redundancy. There are four Light Emitting Diodes(LEDs) mounted on the FCE with collimated beams directed at four two dimensional Position Sensing Devices(PSDs) mounted on the ISPR. This allows for tracking the position and orientation of the FCE with respect to the ISPR. 3, record 15, English, - microgravity%20vibration%20isolation%20subsystem

Developed specifically for use in the microgravity environment, the Space DRUMSÖ(Dynamically Responding Ultrasonic Matrix System) facility uses an acoustic levitation process that enables large fluid or solid material samples to be positioned and held stably in microgravity while they are being processed on the space station. Called containerless processing, this leading-edge system of dynamic acoustic beam positioning prevents the samples from touching the walls of their containers, thus avoiding defects or contamination. 2, record 22, English, - acoustic%20levitation

The Material Science Laboratory (MSL) offers a multi-user capability to support scientific research in solidification physics, crystal growth with semi-conductors, measurement of thermophysical properties and the physics of liquid states. MSL occupies about half of an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] in the US Lab, and one ISPR in the Columbus Laboratory. The two MSL versions are identical except for minor rack interface differences. Each MSL comprises a core element consisting of a sealed process chamber in which interchangeable furnace inserts are hosted. These inserts process the samples. The sample cartridges are manually loaded into one of the furnaces. The furnace can be moved over the sample cartridge to displace the thermal gradients. Diagnostic systems provide scientific data on the facility and sample cartridge during operations. As the furnaces are modular, they can be upgraded or replaced according to utilisation needs. Additional MSL units complete the accommodation and operational interfaces to the laboratory. 4, record 26, English, - materials%20sciences%20laboratory
