The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3 is an Exploration Systems’ transition flight experiment in the Human System Research and Technology area. BCAT-3 provides a unique opportunity to explore fundamental physics and simultaneously develop important future technology, including computers operating on light, complex biomolecular pharmaceuticals, clean sources of geothermal power, and novel rocket engines for interplanetary travel. These studies depend entirely on the microgravity environment provided by the International Space Station(ISS) ;in all other locations accessible to science, gravity dominates and precludes investigation of any other effects of interest. The experiment itself [consists of] photographing samples of colloidal particles with a digital camera onboard the ISS. Colloids are tiny nanoscale spheres of plexiglass a thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair(submicron radius) that are suspended in a fluid. They are ubiquitous(e. g., milk, smoke, and paint) and therefore interesting to study directly. Colloids are also small enough that they behave much like atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The 10 samples in BCAT-3 are made from the same ingredients, each a recipe with different proportions, and are grouped into three experiments : critical point, binary alloy, and surface crystallization. [Text followed by an illustration of a BCAT-3 sample holder. ]

CONT

BCAT-3 is comprised of three separate experiments, which are individually referred to as a binary alloy (BCAT-3-BA), surface crystallization (BCAT-3-SC) and critical point (BCAT-3-CP). The critical point investigation is continuing with additional samples on future ISS [International Space Station] expeditions and will be referred to as Binary Colloidal Alloy Test - 4. BCAT-4 will consist of two sets of samples referred to as BCAT - 3 and 4: Critical Point (BCAT-3-4-CP) and BCAT-4:Polydisperse (BCAT-4-Poly). ... The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3 (BCAT-3) hardware supported three investigations in which ISS crews photographed samples of colloidal particles (tiny nanoscale spheres suspended in liquid) to document liquid/gas phase changes, growth of binary crystals, and the formation of colloidal crystals confined to a surface. Colloids are small enough that in a microgravity environment without sedimentation and convection, they behave much as atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The BCAT-3 payload consists of ten small samples of colloid alloys in which the microscopic colloid particles are mixed together into a liquid. These ten samples are contained within a small case that is the size of a school textbook. At the start of an experiment run, all ten samples are shaken to completely remix the colloid samples, much in the same way that salad dressing must be shaken to remix oil and vinegar. After the samples are mixed, what remains is periodically photographed using a digital camera until the colloid and liquid components of those samples have separated or the polymers have formed crystals. The samples can be remixed to repeat the experiment. The ten samples in BCAT-3 were selected as part of three separate experiments examining different physical processes: critical point, binary alloys, and surface crystallization.

The Microgravity Science Glovebox(MSG) is a joint development project between NASA and the European Space Agency(ESA). The double rack unit is a versatile research facility designed to permit the flexibility of crew-manipulated investigations. Its configuration has been planned around the concept of an experimental workstation where a variety of experiments can be installed and operated in a fashion very similar to their operation in a ground-based laboratory.... Specifically, the facility provides a large enclosed work volume, power, video, photography, vacuum connections, heat rejection, stowage, filtered air, gaseous nitrogen, lighting, airlock access, physical positioning and hold-down attachments, and computer data acquisition and control capabilities.

CONT

The MSG [Microgravity Science Glovebox] is a containment facility designed for supporting a wide range of microgravity science investigations and demonstrations. In the sealed mode, the MSG serves as a single level of containment by providing a physical barrier. In the air circulation mode the MSG serves as a one failure tolerant containment by providing a physical barrier and a negative pressure relative to the cabin. The MSG further facilitates investigations by providing many of the resources that are typically used by microgravity science investigations.

The application of robotics in space poses difficult control problems. One of these is the precise control of the forces exerted by the robot during contact tasks such as inserting brittle samples into ports with small clearances, or opening doors or drawers without overstepping microgravity disturbance limits or actuating a mechanism with a specified force level. The cost of developing, from the beginning, a mature and robust space robot controller with these capabilities is prohibitive in terms of the resources available for space robotics research in Europe : a mature industrial robot controller-with less advanced capabilities-already represents several tens of man-years of development, and has proved its reliability in thousands of demanding round-the-clock manufacturing installations.

It has interfaces to the US Lab or Columbus Laboratory. Sensors, direct drive motor, battery and electronics are housed in the "Main Box". Chair and human adapters provide the subject restraints. The Microgravity Isolation Frame, to which the Main Box attaches, minimises disturbances to other payloads. MARES uses the Human Research Facility portable computer(HRF PC) for interacting with the subject/operator. MARES is capable of acquiring data, controlling and providing power to external devices(HRF PC, PEMS, EMG amplifiers, etc.), and transfers real time data to the rack mounted Workstation for downlink. It is capable of 1 hour of stand-alone data collection...

Three Materials Science Research Racks will be a major portion of the U. S. Laboratory facilities. The European Space Agency will provide the core for the Experiment Module that will occupy the right half of the rack and will house five insert modules. NASA and ESA [European Space Agency] each will provide two inserts, and the German Space Agency(DLR) will provide a fifth. Each of the five inserts will be a furnace to process materials in different ways, such as melting and freezing a sample from one end to the other(directional solidification) or quenching a sample quickly to "freeze" its condition. The German insert will be a special furnace that uses a rotating magnetic field to control flows within the molten samples. The left half of the rack will be occupied for nine months by equipment from NASA's Space Products Development Division, before it is made available to microgravity science researchers. The Experiment Modules and their inserts will be replaceable in orbit, so an entire rack will not have to be returned to Earth. There will be a single experiment module in each rack with the experiment support systems taking the left half of the rack and an Experiment Module taking the right half of the rack.

The Material Science Laboratory (MSL) offers a multi-user capability to support scientific research in solidification physics, crystal growth with semi-conductors, measurement of thermophysical properties and the physics of liquid states. MSL occupies about half of an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] in the US Lab, and one ISPR in the Columbus Laboratory. The two MSL versions are identical except for minor rack interface differences. Each MSL comprises a core element consisting of a sealed process chamber in which interchangeable furnace inserts are hosted. These inserts process the samples. The sample cartridges are manually loaded into one of the furnaces. The furnace can be moved over the sample cartridge to displace the thermal gradients. Diagnostic systems provide scientific data on the facility and sample cartridge during operations. As the furnaces are modular, they can be upgraded or replaced according to utilisation needs. Additional MSL units complete the accommodation and operational interfaces to the laboratory.

CONT

The MSL will be developed in two versions : Facility 1, to be accommodated within the US Laboratory Module of the International Space Station; and Facility 2, to be accommodated on board the European Columbus Laboratory. These two facilities are very similar to each other; the main differences being that the US Laboratory version of MSL is accommodated inside the NASA Materials Science Research Rack. This rack is equipped with the Active Rack Isolation System ARIS, which provides a modicum of isolation from microgravity disturbances.

The "Microgravity" and "Standard" operational modes are the primary modes for carrying out research activities on the ISS [International Space Station]. These two modes have been specifically defined to optimise the gravity environment of the ISS for user research activities. The Microgravity Mode, as the name suggests, provides the most optimised microgravity environment. The Microgravity Mode has been defined to ensure that : 50% of the International Standard Payload Rack locations within the European Columbus, Destiny and Japanese Kibo laboratories must have quasi-steady state accelerations less than 1 micro-g for at least 30 days continuously, on six occasions each year".

CONT

Mode changes are usually controlled by the ground controller or by on-orbit crew input commands, but the transition to survival mode may be automatically initiated by the ISS.... In the microgravity mode, user payload operations for microgravity research are supported. This mode does include the effects of crew equipment such as exercise devices and latched or hinged enclosures, however crew effects are mitigated to the extent possible.
