Lattice orientations of garnet microstructures, obtained using electron-backscatter diffraction(EBSD) methods, were used to model garnet growth and deformation mechanisms. EBSD analysis uses the backscattered electrons(BSE) emitted from a specimen, in a scanning electron microscope(SEM), to form a diffraction pattern that is indexed. EBSD enables crystallographic orientation measurements of minerals as small as 1 micrometer, and the calculation of misorientation axes and angles(>1 degree) between any two measurements. 2, record 10, English, - electron%20backscattered%20diffraction%20analysis

The analytical electron microscope(AEM) is based on a conventional 200 keV transmission electron microscope(TEM) which has been augmented to include the functions of a scanning transmission electron microscope(STEM) and the scanning electron microscope(SEM). Since the electrons must penetrate through the specimen, the specimen dimensions must be no greater than 1 micrometer thick, and preferably in the range of 100 nm. Bulk specimens may be thinned to this range by a combination of mechanical, chemical, and ion sputtering techniques, all of which are available in the microanalysis laboratory. As an imaging tool, the AEM is capable of 0. 3 nm spatial resolution in the TEM mode, 1 nm resolution in the STEM mode, and 3 nm resolution in the SEM mode. Elemental microanalysis is carried out by means of energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry(EDS) and electron energy loss spectrometry(EELS), which together provide sensitivity to all elements with atomic number > 2. Quantitative analysis is carried out by means of a relative sensitivity factor method based on glass, mineral, and metal alloy standards. 2, record 22, English, - analytical%20electron%20microscope

2, record 22, French, - microscope%20%C3%A9lectronique%20analytique

Satellite derived remote sensed images are representations of the variation in intensity of electromagnetic energy reflected from the Earth’s surface. The specific image produced is determined by the wavelength of the electromagnetic energy that is being sensed, and the physical properties of the matter that reflects the energy. Aerial photographs use only the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (5 x 107 metres = .5 microns), whereas Landsat TM and SPOT images record the Earth’s reflectivity at seven different wavelengths in the visible and infrared range, and radar images record the reflectivity of wavelengths in the non-visible range of 1 to 10 cm (microwaves). 3, record 23, English, - infrared%20band

3, record 23, French, - bande%20infrarouge

CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors(PNTDs) are made of polymers that are sensitive to charged particles of linear energy transfer(LET) greater than or equal to 5 keV/micrometer. CR-39 PNTDs are usually made up of thin(approximately 0. 6 mm) sheets which are assembled in multi-layer stacks exposed in three mutually-orthogonal orientations. Charged particles that pass through the CR-39 PNTD with enough LET break the molecular bonds of the polymer and form a pathway known as the "latent damage trail. "As the amount of radiation the CR-39 PNTD is exposed to increases, so does the number of latent damage trails. 1, record 33, English, - CR%2D39%20plastic%20nuclear%20track%20detector

1, record 33, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20solide%20de%20traces%20nucl%C3%A9aires

Why is the sky blue?... Scattering, simply defined, is when light hitting a volume of air is reflected out of the air, as opposed to being absorbed or just passing through. The light bounces off of individual air particles in random directions, scattering, and making that air appear the color of the light being scattered. Preferential light scattering means that some colors of light scatter better, while other colors tend only to pass through. Lord Rayleigh, a 19th century British physicist, first explained preferential light scattering.(Sir Isaac Newton first established the phenomenon's existence.) Common air particle diameters are 1 micron(micrometer),. 1 micron, and. 01 micron.... "Rayleigh's Law indicates that the light energy scattered per unit volume of air containing particles smaller than. 1 micron is inversely proportional to the 4th power of the wavelength of the illuminating radiation(Schaeffer 155) "... More simply stated, the amount of light that bounces around in our air increases as the wavelength(which is related to color) of the light decreases. 2, record 35, English, - Rayleigh%20Law

Wear is measured by a spring gauge micrometer through a ratchet type loader which compensates for wear at the rate of 0. 0000556 in. per tooth movement. The pin and V-blocks are submerged in the sample of oil during the test. 1, record 52, English, - Falex%20tester
