Lattice orientations of garnet microstructures, obtained using electron-backscatter diffraction(EBSD) methods, were used to model garnet growth and deformation mechanisms. EBSD analysis uses the backscattered electrons(BSE) emitted from a specimen, in a scanning electron microscope(SEM), to form a diffraction pattern that is indexed. EBSD enables crystallographic orientation measurements of minerals as small as 1 micrometer, and the calculation of misorientation axes and angles(>1 degree) between any two measurements. 2, record 1, English, - electron%20backscattered%20diffraction%20analysis

A nanometer(nm) is 1, 000 times smaller than a micrometer. It is equal to 1/1, 000, 000, 000th or one-billionth of a meter. When things are this small, you can’t see them with your eyes, or a light microscope. Objects this small require a special tool called a scanning probe microscope... Atoms are smaller than a nanometer. One atom measures ~0. 1-0. 3 nm, depending on the element. 8, record 2, English, - nanometre

The analytical electron microscope(AEM) is based on a conventional 200 keV transmission electron microscope(TEM) which has been augmented to include the functions of a scanning transmission electron microscope(STEM) and the scanning electron microscope(SEM). Since the electrons must penetrate through the specimen, the specimen dimensions must be no greater than 1 micrometer thick, and preferably in the range of 100 nm. Bulk specimens may be thinned to this range by a combination of mechanical, chemical, and ion sputtering techniques, all of which are available in the microanalysis laboratory. As an imaging tool, the AEM is capable of 0. 3 nm spatial resolution in the TEM mode, 1 nm resolution in the STEM mode, and 3 nm resolution in the SEM mode. Elemental microanalysis is carried out by means of energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry(EDS) and electron energy loss spectrometry(EELS), which together provide sensitivity to all elements with atomic number > 2. Quantitative analysis is carried out by means of a relative sensitivity factor method based on glass, mineral, and metal alloy standards. 2, record 4, English, - analytical%20electron%20microscope

2, record 4, French, - microscope%20%C3%A9lectronique%20analytique
