Scanning laser ophthalmoscopy is an imaging technique that mimics essential features of conventional fundus photography but has better spatial selectivity for the plane of interest in the fundus. Because [a scanning laser ophthalmoscope] picks up information only from a small volume in three-dimensional space at any given time and then reconstructs an image from a three-dimensional scanning array of such points, scatter and fluorescence from the anterior segment of the eye is very effectively rejected. Built on the flying-spot scanner principle, it only illuminates a spot with a diameter of a few micrometers at the fundus and then sweeps the spot across the horizontal and vertical directions of an image plane inside the eye... 8, record 1, English, - scanning%20laser%20ophthalmoscopy

In many cartographic establishments the whole of the work of the plotting and drawing stages of constructing a map projection can be done by coordinatograph... This instrument creates the two orthogonal axes of rectangular coordinates by means of one fixed steel beam and a travelling steel gantry which has a moving plotting head attached to it. Linear displacements of the gantry and the plotting head may be transferred to scales by means of lead-screws or a rack-and-pinion movement. With the aid of verniers or micrometers attached to each movement it is possible to read or plot coordinates to a least count of 0. 1 mm [millimeter] on the majority of instruments. 2, record 2, English, - coordinatograph

The direct radiative effects of trace gases in the atmosphere are primarily due to their absorption in the infrared part of the spectrum. Most effective in this regard are gases with absorption in the parts of the spectrum where water vapour and CO2 are almost transparent(8-13 [micrometers]), the atmospheric window. If absorption bands for different gases overlap, the effects of a changing concentration on the radiative transfer are reduced. Gases with no change in their abundance do not directly contribute to a climatic change, but may affect the magnitude of the role of other constituents due to such overlapping of absorption bands. 3, record 6, English, - direct%20radiative%20effect

In this regime, carriers(electrons and holes) excited by absorbed photons are strongly accelerated in the strong internal electric field, so that they can generate secondary carriers, as it also occurs in photomultipliers. The avalanche process, which may take place over a distance of only a few micrometers, for example, effectively amplifies the photocurrent by a significant factor. Therefore, avalanche photodiodes can be used for very sensitive detectors, which need less electronic signal amplification and are thus less susceptible to electronic noise. 3, record 16, English, - avalanche%20photodiode

Radiation damage in solids … Because the particles … have different energies and different ranges, the distance from the site of formation to the region where they cause damage is different. Thus, the size of the fissile kernels itself(also called inclusions) embedded in the inert matrix material becomes an important factor in determining the regions of damage in a material. To this end a distinction is made between a microdispersed and a macrodispersed fuel. A fuel is called microdispersed if the size of the fissile inclusions is less than 10 [micrometers], and otherwise is called macrodispersed. Microdispersed fuels can be produced either by infiltration or by compression of a mixture of matrix grains and fissile grains, while macrodispersed fuels can be produced by compression only. The damage effects in microdispersed fuels will approach those in a solid solution, while the radiation effects in macrodispersed fuels will mainly occur in the inclusions themselves and in a thin matrix layer around the inclusion, predominantly due to neutron damage. 1, record 18, English, - microdispersed%20fuel

Satellite derived remote sensed images are representations of the variation in intensity of electromagnetic energy reflected from the Earth’s surface. The specific image produced is determined by the wavelength of the electromagnetic energy that is being sensed, and the physical properties of the matter that reflects the energy. Aerial photographs use only the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (5 x 107 metres = .5 microns), whereas Landsat TM and SPOT images record the Earth’s reflectivity at seven different wavelengths in the visible and infrared range, and radar images record the reflectivity of wavelengths in the non-visible range of 1 to 10 cm (microwaves). 3, record 25, English, - infrared%20band

3, record 25, French, - bande%20infrarouge

In X-ray topography, a crystal is illuminated using a highly parallel monochromatic X-ray beam and the diffraction pattern is recorded using fine-grain film placed very close to the crystal. Under these illumination conditions, the diffraction from different points in the crystal is spatially resolved at the film, and the diffraction spots provide images of the crystal. Image contrast results from variations in the diffracted intensity due to variations in lattice orientation and spacing associated with crystal defects and strains. X-ray topography probes bulk crystal perfection with a spatial resolution of a few micrometers. 2, record 29, English, - topography

A portion of the sunlight that reaches Earth is absorbed into the system, while some of the light is reflected by our planet back into space. Kinesin is a dimeric motor protein that can move for several micrometers along a microtubule without dissociating. The two kinesin motor domains are thought to move processively by operating in a hand-over-hand manner, although the mechanism of such cooperativity is unknown. Recently, a ~50-amino acid region adjacent to the globular motor domain(termed the neck) has been shown to be sufficient for conferring dimerization and processive movement. Based upon its amino acid sequence, the neck is proposed to dimerize through a coiled-coil interaction. To determine the accuracy of this prediction and to investigate the possible function of the neck region in motor activity, we have prepared a serie of synthetic peptides corresponding to different regions of the human kinesin neck and analyzed each peptide for its respective secondary content and stability. 2, record 34, English, - synthetic%20peptide

2, record 34, French, - peptide%20synth%C3%A9tique

It has been suggested... that since the thinnest layer of sand to act successfully as an erosion pumping filter was 25 mm, and the slurry penetrated/3mm in this case, then a geotextile with a thickness of 10 mm or more might successfully replace the sand blanket layer. The fact that the most successful sand blanket have voids ranging from 5 to 30 [micrometers] seems to suggest that the geotextile's voids should be of a similar magnitude. Erosion pumping filters, using a geotextile in conjunction with a sand blanket, are much more effective than geotextiles alone. 1, record 48, English, - sand%20blanket
