Malnutrition represents a global challenge that encompasses three dimensions simultaneously : undernourishment and food insecurity, through insufficient intake of dietary energy and protein; undernutrition or micronutrient deficiencies; and overnutrition, through excess intake of dietary energy, manifest in the number of overweight and obese people. These three dimensions are known as "the triple burden of malnutrition. "

malnutrición: La Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu BBVA), con el asesoramiento de la Real Academia Española, indica que la desnutrición es solo uno de los trastornos englobados en el significado más genérico de malnutrición. El Diccionario de términos médicos, de la Real Academia Nacional de Medicina (España), define de modo general malnutrición como ‘cualquier trastorno de la nutrición, ya sea como consecuencia de una alimentación insuficiente, excesiva o mal equilibrada’, pero también como sinónimo de desnutrición, cuyo significado, más restringido, hace referencia al ‘estado nutricional deficiente por carencia, malabsorción, aumento de las necesidades o pérdida excesiva de nutrientes’. Toda desnutrición es una malnutrición, pero no a la inversa: solo un tipo concreto de malnutrición es desnutrición.
