Primary disinfection is the application of a disinfectant in the drinking water treatment plant, with a primary objective to achieve the necessary microbial inactivation. The efficacy of disinfection using chlorine can be predicted based on a knowledge of the residual free chlorine concentration, temperature, pH, and contact time. This relationship is commonly referred to as the CT concept and is used by public drinking water suppliers as one tool for ensuring adequate inactivation of organisms during disinfection. CT is the product of the residual concentration of disinfectant(C), measured in mg/L at the outlet of the contact chamber, and the disinfectant contact time(T), measured in minutes. The CT values required to achieve the necessary inactivation will depend on the microorganism targeted, pH, and temperature. 1, record 1, English, - CT%20concept

1, record 27, Spanish, - esterilizar

Environmental Fate. The intent of environmental fate information is to provide an understanding of the factors that influence the short and long-term presence of the microorganism in the environment.... Controlled environmental fate studies. Fate data is most crucial when the effects data demonstrate either a wide host range or significant adverse effects(e. g., adverse effects on plants and animals, or other non-target organisms of environmental and/or economic importance). Environmental fate data may come from well designed microcosm experiments, mesocosm experiments, or it may come from other long-term, controlled studies in which the fate of the microorganism is tested or monitored. Environmental fate test data may include but should not be limited to :-persistence, multiplication and dispersion of the microorganism under different conditions and in different environments(land, marine, freshwater, etc.), and;-the ability of the genetic material introduced into a genetically modified microorganism to be transferred to other organisms or to persist in the environment. 1, record 58, English, - environmental%20fate%20test

1, record 58, French, - essai%20sur%20le%20devenir%20environnemental

Transformation is the process of transferring a free DNA [deoxyribonucleic acid] molecule from a donor to a recipient bacterium. In vitro, the uptake of a plasmid into the DNA of a living microorganism can be useful in determining gene expression and in vivo, transformation is useful to cells for the exchange of information. In the case of plasmid transformation, a plasmid which has a known gene is introduced to competent bacterial cells for uptake. In order for a cell to be competent it must have a binding site for the donor DNA and will usually(in vitro) have been treated with salts for easier uptake of plasmid DNA. 3, record 65, English, - competent%20donor%20bacterium%20cell

[Regulatory mechanisms that govern the synthesis of enzymes] evolved to regulate enzymatic reactions because it is usually detrimental for an organism in nature to overproduce its internal metabolites. If it does, it merely secretes them into the environment for other microorganisms to consume. All other things being equal, the overproducing microorganism is then at a competitive disadvantage, and usually it fails to survive. 1, record 86, English, - overproducing%20microorganism

1, record 86, French, - micro%2Dorganisme%20surproducteur

[One of the barriers to the establishment and expression of foreign DNA within a microorganism is the] intervening gene barrier resulting from the fact that eukaryotic DNA gene sequences have intervening genes(or introns) which are removed in the formation of messenger RNA whilst prokaryotes lack both introns and the "processing" enzymes. 1, record 87, English, - processing%20enzyme
