MICRORELIEF [6 records]

Record 1 2018-02-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
CONT

Slope marshes develop on lower elevation slopes where water-bearing strata and impermeable layers contact the ground surface. Slope marshes occupy wet seepage areas where groundwater discharges. The slope marsh is characterized by hummocky microrelief, soggy, saturated ground and flushes.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géomorphologie et géomorphogénie
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
DEF

A polygon outlined by sand wedges underlying its boundaries.

CONT

Sand-wedge polygons(tesselations) in the McMurdo Sound region, Antarctica...-A microrelief pattern of polygons 20 to 40 feet in diameter occurs in the perennially frozen ground of the glacierfree lowlands of the McMurdo Sound region... They are similar to ice-wedge polygons in the Arctic except that they are in ground devoid of vegetation and are outlined by textural changes in the soil between the inter-polygonal furrow and the enclosed polygonal areas. The term 'sand wedge’ polygon is here proposed for this widespread phenomenon.... Suggested origin of the polygons and sand wedges is similar to the origin of foliated ice wedges and polygons in the Arctic.

CONT

Much of the surface in the area now occupied by McMurdo Station was originally covered by sand-wedge polygons, which are ubiquitous periglacial features across the ice-free lowlands of McMurdo Sound.

OBS

sand wedge polygon: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

CONT

Record 3 2008-01-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ecology (General)
  • Environment
CONT

The composition of the many halophytic herbaceous communities that colonize the upper level of the shoreline varies not only with submersion rate but also with microrelief, soil texture, and soil salinity.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Écologie (Généralités)
  • Environnement
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Physical Geography (General)
  • Structural Testing (Materials)
  • Landscape Architecture
DEF

A term applied to surface irregularities only when it is necessary to distinguish them from microrelief.

CONT

At the regional scale, landform may include such diverse types as valleys, mountains, rolling hills, prairies, and plains. These landform types are typically referred to as "macrolandforms".

OBS

Macrolandform: valley, mountain, rolling hill, prairie, plain. Microlandform: mound, berm, slope, level area, elevation changes via steps and ramps. Minilandform: ripple of a sand dune, textural variation of stones and rocks.

  • Architecture paysagère
OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Soil Science
DEF

The microrelief of soils produced by expansion and contraction caused by changes in moisture.

CONT

Gilgai is found in soils that contain large amounts of clay, which swells and shrinks noticeably with wetting and drying. It usually occurs as a succession of microbasins and microknolls in nearly level areas or as microvalleys and microridges parallel to the direction of the slope.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Science du sol
DEF
