Photic retinopathy is a generalized term for light-induced retinal damage. It is most often due to inadvertent exposure. Examples include retinal damage induced by solar viewing or the operating microscope. The mechanism is typically photochemical, and this may be enhanced by elevated tissue temperature and increased blood oxygen tension.... The extent of retinal injury and the likelihood of visual recovery depend on multiple factors, including the location and area of exposed retina, the duration, intensity, and spectrum of the light source, and host susceptibility factors, such as age, nutritional status, ocular pigmentation, core temperature, clarity of ocular media, and pre-existing retinal disease. 3, record 1, English, - photic%20retinopathy

Analytical ferrography is among the most powerful diagnostic tools in oil analysis. The test is qualitative, because it relies on the skill and knowledge of the ferrographic analyst.... A sample of the machine's lubricating oil is taken and diluted, then run across a glass slide. This glass slide is then placed on a magnetic cylinder that attracts the contaminants. Non-magnetic contaminants remain distributed across the slide from the wash. These contaminants are then washed, to remove excess oil, heated to 315 °C(600 °F) for 2 minutes and the slide is analysed under a microscope. After analysis, the particles will be ranked according to size. Particles larger than 30 μm in size are considered "abnormal" and indicate severe wear. 2, record 14, English, - analytical%20ferrography

It is true that most archaeans don’t look that different from bacteria under the microscope, and that the extreme conditions under which many species live has made them difficult to culture, so their unique place among living organisms long went unrecognized. However, biochemically and genetically, they are as different from bacteria as you are. Although many books and articles still refer to them as "Archaebacteria", that term has been abandoned because they aren’t bacteria--they’re Archaea. 3, record 32, English, - archaeon

Seeing where glowing molecules reside within a cell is helpful for a range of research projects--from studies of how the distribution of various proteins changes during an organism's development to investigations of how administration of a drug alters the locations of certain proteins. The microscope, called DeltaVision, is manufactured by Applied Precision, based in Issaquah, Wash. It works by magnifying images and quantifying the intensity of light shed by the sample. The user specifies which colors of light are of interest. For instance, a user can program the microscope to report the intensity of a particular shade of green shining from the cytoplasm of a cell. After a researcher uses the microscope to make a series of optical slices through a specimen, the scope's computer "deconvolves" the images--in other words, it subtracts the out-of-focus light. Then the computer stacks together the images of the slices to reconstruct the original microscope sample. This gives researchers gh-resolution images of the sample's three-dimensional structure. 2, record 47, English, - wide%20field%20deconvolution%20microscopy

Brightfield microscopy is the most elementary form of microscope illumination techniques... The name "brightfield" is derived from the fact that the specimen is dark and contrasted by the surrounding bright viewing field.... In brightfield microscopy a specimen is placed on the stage of the microscope and incandescent light from the microscope's light source is aimed at a lens beneath the specimen.... light passes through the specimen and then is collected by an objective lens situated in a turret above the stage.... This technique can be used to view fixed specimens or live cells. Since many organic specimens are transparent or opaque, staining is required to cause the contrast that allows them to be visible under the microscope. 2, record 55, English, - bright%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

It is a tubular piece, protruding horizontally to the left or the right hand of the observer.... Similar "drawing tubes" for camera lucida viewing with stereomicroscopes are also available. Because each ocular in the stereomicroscope produces an image of the specimen from a different angle, both images together give the impression of 3D-vision, but obviously, the drawing picked up from the drawing tube can be superimposed with only one of the two members of the stereopair. 1, record 63, English, - drawing%20tube

The resolution of an optical imaging system – a microscope, telescope, or camera – can be limited by factors such as imperfections in the lenses or misalignment. 3, record 64, French, - limit%C3%A9%20par%20la%20diffraction

Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration. 1, record 70, English, - laser%20force%20microscope

It is important to establish fabrication technologies for nanostructures as well as nanometer-scale optical characterizations. The selective growth technique and Stranski-Krastanow growth for the nanostructure fabrication, demonstrating natural ordering of InGaAs quantum dots on multi-atomic steps without any lithographic processing, will be discussed. Photoluminescence from a single quantum dot and direct observation of two dimensional electron motion in point contact structures are also discussed using the far-field optical microscope and the near-field optical microscope. 1, record 74, English, - far%2Dfield%20optical%20microscope

... the scanning ion-conductance microscope(SICM)... scans a sample not with a metal or diamond tip but with a glass micropipette containing a tiny electrode. The workers immerse the sample and the pipette in a bath of electrolyte(such as a salt solution) and establish a voltage difference between the electrode within the pipette and another electrode in the bath. A current of ions tends to flow between the electrodes by way of the pipette opening, but when the pipette approaches the surface of the sample, the current weakens. It disappears altogether when the scanned pipette touches the sample, which blocks the opening. Equipped with a feedback mechanism that maintains a constant ion current through the pipette opening, the SICM can profile a sample's topography. The fineness of the pipette does limit the SICM's resolution to about. 2 micron(10 nanometers may eventually be feasible). 3, record 79, English, - scanning%20ion%2Dconductance%20microscope

In the STM [scanning tunneling microscope] the "aperture" is a tiny tungsten probe, its tip ground so fine that it may consist of only a single atom and measure just. 2 nanometer in width. Piezoelectric controls maneuver the tip to within a nanometer or two of the surface of a conducting specimen so close that the electron clouds of the atom at the probe tip and of the nearest atom of the specimen overlap. When a small voltage is applied to the tip, electrons "tunnel" across the gap, generating a minuscule tunneling current. The strength of the current is exquisitely sensitive to the width of the gap; typically it decreases by a factor of 10 each time the gap is widened by. 1 nanometer-half the diameter of an atom. 2, record 83, English, - tunneling%20current

... the scanning thermal microscope... The microscope's probe may be the world's tiniest thermometer : it can measure surface-temperature variations of a ten-thousandth of a degree on a scale of tens of nanometers. The probe consists of a tungsten wire ending in a point perhaps 30 nanometers across. The wire is coated with a second metal, nickel, which is separated from the tungsten by a layer of insulator everywhere except at the tip of the probe. The tungsten-nickel junction acts as a thermocouple, generating a voltage proportional to its temperature. 2, record 85, English, - scanning%20thermal%20microscope

We present a novel technique in which a reflection scanning near-field optical microscope(SNOM) is used for direct writing of nano-scale patterns into hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces. The reflection SNOM is operated as a combined shear-force/near-field microscope enabling simultaneous imaging of topographical and optical properties with subwavelength resolution.... Beside high resolution optical imaging(<50 nm) and patterning of hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces, the SNOM can also be used for transferring nano-scale patterns into ordinary photo resist with a typical resolution of 50-100 nm. The SNOM thereby overcomes the far-field diffraction limit of conventional photolithography. 5, record 87, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscope

1, record 94, French, - pointe

The Dimension 3000 Scanning Probe Microscope(SPM) encompasses several techniques for studying surface properties of materials at the atomic to micron scale. It measures surface structure and produces images with three-dimensional information. It measures surface roughness and maps the surface based on atomic force, friction, magnetic field, relative stiffness, or electric field gradient. Typical applications : 1. Studying surface of optical components(especially mirrors) [;] 2. Mapping of magnetic properties of tapes[;] 3. Measuring surface pit depth and width. Mode of operation : An atomically sharp tip, held at the end of a cantilever, is scanned in a regular pattern across a surface. As the tip probes the surface, the interaction between the surface and tip is measured using a laser-based system. 3, record 98, English, - scanning%20probe%20microscope
