... the magnetic-force microscope(MFM), enables us to look at the actual performance of such heads-the definition, uniformity and strength of the magnetic field they produce. In place of the tungsten or silicon needle, the MFM has a magnetized nickel on probe. When the vibrating probe is brought near a magnetic sample, the tip feels a force that changes its resonance frequency and hence its vibration amplitude. The MFM can trace the magnetic-field pattern emanating from data-recording heads at a resolution of better than 25 nanometers. The device can also study the structure of the magnetic bits that store data on disks and other media, giving insight into both head performance and the quality of the storage medium. 3, record 1, English, - magnetic%2Dforce%20microscope

LBC is a new method of cervical cell sample preparation. Samples are collected [in a similar way to the standard Pap smear], but using a brush-like device rather than a spatula. The head of the device is rinsed or broken off into a vial of preservative fluid so that most or all of the cervical cells are retained. Samples are transported to the laboratory where they are mixed to disperse the cells. Cellular debris, such as blood or mucus, is removed and a thin layer of cervical cells is deposited on a microscope slide, which is then stained. 2, record 2, English, - liquid%2Dbased%20cytology

4, record 2, French, - cytologie%20en%20milieu%20liquide

Myosin molecules were known to be more complex : they have globular "head" domains that bind actin filaments and helical "tail" domains that self-associate to form bipolar myosin filaments. In 1963 Hugh E. Huxley of the MRC demonstrated that myosin heads bind to actin filaments at an acute angle; under the electron microscope, the filaments, adorned with myosin heads, looked like a series of arrowheads. 1, record 3, English, - myosin%20head

Micrometer microscopes... are fitted at opposite ends of the diameter of a graduated circle, either horizontal or vertical....... Looking into the eyepiece, one sees two twin wires.... At the side of the microscope there is a drum, or micrometer head.... By rotating the drum, the wires are moved across the field until they straddle one of the larger divisions on the graduated circle.... The displacement is measured by the drum, and one thus gets a reading. 4, record 4, English, - micrometer%20microscope
