MICROSCOPIC SCALE [12 records]

Record 1 2012-03-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
  • Origins and Composition of Coal
DEF

A coal microlithotype that contains a combination of inertinite and exinite.

OBS

The term microlithotype was developed to permit the designation of rock types within coal that are at a microscopic scale and their definition is based on maceral percentages. All macerals have a suffix "-inite" and microlithotypes have the suffix "-ite. "Thus, layers greater than 0. 05 mm in thickness and consisting of greater than 95% vitrinite are termed vitrite. Bimaceral(clarite, durite and vitrinertite) and trimaceral(duroclarite and clarodurite) microlithotypes have names that are derived from lithotypes rather than macerals.

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
DEF

Applied to a fine-scale intergrowth of quartz and either alkali feldspar or plagioclase found as interstitial, late-stage products in the groundmass of granites.

OBS

It is similar to graphic and micrographic but differs from these textures in that the intergrowth of quartz and feldspar is more irregular.

OBS

When developed on a microscopic scale, graphic texture is termed granophyric texture.

Record 9 1995-07-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Heat (Physics)
  • Effects of Heat (Energy Transfer)
CONT

When a pot of cold water is heated on a stove, the temperature rises steadily until the boiling point is reached. Then, counterintuitively, the temperature gets stuck. To unstick the temperature and raise it beyond the boiling point requires strenuous effort, in the form of a large amount of heat that must be supplied to the pot.... The temperature of the water gets stuck because, on the microscopic scale, to change liquid water into steam you must supply energy to rip apart clusters of water molecules. The energy needed to rearrange the molecules does not go into producing faster motion, and so it does not raise the temperature of the water. The temperature thus remains constant until the boiling is complete.
