Ground-based weather radars emerged during World War II and have since been used to observe precipitation, mostly over land. Ground-based radars send out pulses of microwave energy in narrow beams that scan in a circular pattern. When the microwave pulse encounters precipitation particles in the atmosphere, the energy is scattered in all directions, sending some energy back to the radar. These measurements are used to estimate intensity, altitude, precipitation type(e. g., rain, snow, hail), and motion. Obtaining continuous measurements of precipitation from ground-based systems(e. g., from rain gauges and radar systems) presents a challenge due to large gaps between monitoring sites on land and huge gaps over the ocean. 1, record 6, English, - ground%2Dbased%20weather%20radar

Remote Sensing is the science and art of acquiring information(spectral, spatial, temporal) about material objects, area, or phenomenon, without coming into physical contact with the objects, or area, or phenomenon under investigation.... In remote sensing, information transfer is accomplished by use of electromagnetic radiation(EMR). EMR is a form of energy that reveals its presence by the observable effects it produces when it strikes the matter.... Types [of remote sensing] in respect to the type of energy resources. Passive remote sensing makes use of sensors that detect the reflected or emitted electro-magnetic radiation from natural sources. Active remote sensing makes use of sensors that detect reflected responses from objects that are irradiated from artificially-generated energy sources, such as radar.... In respect to wavelength regions, remote sensing is categorized as follows : visible and reflective infrared remote sensing, thermal infrared remote sensing and microwave remote sensing. 6, record 20, English, - electromagnetic%20remote%20sensing

... imaging radar systems are active sensors that "illuminate" surface features with broadcast microwave energy and record a returned signal. Most imaging radar systems produce microwaves with wavelengths between 1 cm and 1 meter, longer than the wavelengths used in weather radar to detect rain and snow. These longer wavelength microwave signals propagate through the atmosphere and clouds with almost no interaction or weakening. As a result imaging radar systems can be used to map surface features day or night and in almost any weather conditions. These characteristics make radar imaging especially useful in tropical and polar regions where persistent cloud cover hampers optical remote sensing efforts. 2, record 21, English, - surface%20feature

In synthetic aperture radar(SAR) imaging, microwave pulses are transmitted by an antenna towards the Earth surface. The microwave energy scattered back to the spacecraft is measured. The SAR makes use of the radar principle to form an image by utilising the time delay of the backscattered signals. In real aperture radar imaging, the groud resolution is limited by the size of the microwave beam sent out from the antenna. Finer details on the ground can be resolved by using a narrower beam. The beam width is inversely proportional to the size of the antenna, i. e. the longer the antenna, the narrower the beam. 2, record 24, English, - radar%20pulse

4, record 27, French, - polarisation
Record number: 27, Textual support number: 3 CONT
4, record 27, French, - polarisation

Traditional methods for acquiring topographic data typically rely on aerial photogrammetry, where measurement of the terrain surface below forest canopy is difficult and error prone. The recent emergence of airborne P-band interferometric synthetic aperture radar(IFSAR), a high-resolution, microwave remote sensing technology, has the potential to provide significantly more accurate terrain models in forested areas. Low-frequency, P-band radar energy physically penetrates through the vegetation canopy and reflects from the underlying terrain surface, allowing for accurate measurement of the terrain surface elevation even in areas with dense forest cover. 3, record 28, English, - interferometric%20synthetic%20aperture%20radar

It was established by the WCRP in 1986 with the initial goal of providing monthly mean precipitation data on a 2. 5 x 2. 5 degree latitude-longitude grid for the period 1986-1995. This was recently extended to the year 2000. The GPCP will accomplish this by merging infrared and microwave satellite estimates of precipitation with rain gauge data from more than 30, 000 stations. 3, record 34, English, - Global%20Precipitation%20Climatology%20Project

Another cavity was mounted in series with and tuned to the same frequency as the first; both cavities were identical except that the second had a gas inlet and outlet ports. From this measuring cell, its microwave energy was sent to a crystal detector. By frequency-modulating the klystron with a 50-cps sine wave voltage on the repeller, a burst of energy passes to the detector each time the generator frequency equals that of the cavities. The detector current is amplified and measured with an oscilloscope. At the beginning of the run, the two cavities are filled with the nitrogen carrier gas and, if the composition in one of the cavities is changed, its electrical size will change... causing a decrease of current from the detector. 1, record 40, English, - crystal%20detector

The laser(or lidar) velocimeter [lidar=light radar] operates in a fashion entirely analogous to that of the airborne Doppler weather radars likely soon to be available for detecting turbulence in storm cells. As with radars, the device detects air movements by observing the motion of particles suspended in the air and carried with it. The only significant difference is that a beam of coherent infrared radiation is used to scan ahead of the aircraft, instead of a beam(or series of pulses) of radio energy in the considerably longer-wavelength microwave band. The frequency of the back-scattered echoes or reflections undergoes Doppler shift detection by standard heterodyning techniques, which involve comparing the frequency of the reflected illumination with that of the original laser beam. Any reflecting object or material which has motion relative to the transmitter/receiver will cause a detectable shift in frequency, which can be isolated from the transmitter's own proper motion(over the ground) and thus yield a precise indication of the speed at which the air is moving several hundred metres in front of the aircraft. From this data, it is easy to compute what the air speed of the aircraft will be when it reaches that particular patch of air in a few seconds’ time [and hence detect possible turbulence ahead]. 2, record 49, English, - laser%20velocimeter
