8, record 1, French, - t%C3%A9l%C3%A9d%C3%A9tection%20en%20hyperfr%C3%A9quences%20passives

In 1965, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson announced the discovery of microwave radiation which uniformly filled the sky and had a blackbody temperature of about 3. 5 K. The pair had been testing a new radio amplifier that was supposed to be exceptionally quiet.... After many attempts to account for all extraneous sources of radio noise, they came to the conclusion that there was a general background of radiation at the radio frequency they were using. After discussions with a group led by Robert Dicke at nearby Princeton University it became clear that they had in fact detected remnant radiation from the origin of the universe. 3, record 3, English, - fossil%20radiation

The MLS detects naturally occurring microwave thermal emissions from Earth’s limb to create vertical profiles of atmospheric gasses, temperature, pressure and cloud ice. MLS looks 90° from the angle of UARS’ [Upper Atmosphere Research Statellite] orbit. Thermal radiation enters the instrument through a three-mirror antenna system. The antenna mechanically scans in the vertical plane through the atmospheric limb every 65.5 seconds. The scan covers a height range from the surface up to 90 km (55 miles). Upon entering the instrument, the signal from the antenna is separated into three signals for processing by different radiometers. The 63-GHz radiometer measures temperature and pressure. The 183-GHz radiometer measures water vapor and ozone. The 205-GHz radiometer measures ClO, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitric acid and water vapor. 2, record 4, English, - microwave%20limb%20sounder

Microwave sensors are particularly effective for measuring land surface hydrological parameters. Since microwave sensors enable us to observe ground surfaces both day and night, we can observe hydrologic phenomena that show remarkable diurnal variation. Further, an inherent feature of a microwave sensor lies in its wavelength between 1 mm and 1 m (0.3 to 300 GHz of frequency), making it possible to conduct observations without influence from weather and to detect the scattering information not only at the surface, but also in the volume. Furthermore, we can directly observe liquid water having larger relative permittivity than other physical parameters because the scattering of microwaves heavily depends on relative permittivity. There are two types of microwave sensors: a passive microwave sensor that observe weak microwave signals naturally radiated from the Earth’s surface, and an active microwave sensor that measures the backscattering coefficient of the transmitted beam. 2, record 5, English, - microwave%20sensor

Remote sensing at microwave wavelengths (generally 30 cm to 0.1 cm wavelength or 1 GHz to a few hundred GHz) is effective because of the relatively insignificant atmospheric attenuation for many microwave windows; [the] thermal microwave emission (day and night); the presence of some pronounced absorption features in the microwave which can be used to monitor atmospheric properties; detectors with adequate sensitivity. 4, record 14, English, - microwave%20datum

3, record 14, French, - donn%C3%A9e%20hyperfr%C3%A9quence
