Subject field(s)
  • Radiotelephony
  • Telecommunications
DEF

A transmitter/receiver unit located in a fixed location which can talk directly to mobiles or portables.

CONT

A transmission and reception station for handling cellular traffic. Usually consists of one or more receive/transmit antenna, microwave dish, and electronic circuitry. Also referred to as a cell site, since it holds one or more tx/rx cells. Base stations are constructed and placed on high buildings, hydro towers, monopoles, or other structures with a good elevation above the area to be covered. Several base stations within an area form a wireless network.

DEF

A fixed-frequency transmitter tube used to produce high energy microwave pulses. Electrons emitted from the cathode gyrate under the influence of a strong magnetic field before reaching the anode. The output is fed to an antenna through a waveguide network.

OBS

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tubes et lampes (Électronique)
  • Radar, radioguidage et radiogoniométrie
  • Micro-ondes (Télécommunications)
OBS

Terme et définition normalisés par la CEI.

OBS

With a microwave system, essentially requiring line-of-sight links, this would in turn postulate either an extremely dense and costly network or ground stations,... or the provision of some other form of system architecture. An obvious solution exists in the form of a satellite data link system.

The NASCOM network is a global system that provides communications support to all NASA projects. Voice, data, and teletype links are available through the network for connecting the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System(TDRSS) with user spacecraft control centers. Land lines, submarine cables, and microwave/satellite links make up this communications system. The user services available from the Space network, which includes TDRSS and its supporting Goddard elements, are provided through NASCOM.

CONT

Single-crystal [turbine] blade casting. The process works as follows : the wax matrix, around which the ceramic mould is built up, is poured around a thin ceramic plate called a "strongback" which splits the mould and carries the network of cooling tunnels. This remains in place when the wax is melted out by a microwave furnace.
