The MLS detects naturally occurring microwave thermal emissions from Earth's limb to create vertical profiles of atmospheric gasses, temperature, pressure and cloud ice. MLS looks 90° from the angle of UARS’ [Upper Atmosphere Research Statellite] orbit. Thermal radiation enters the instrument through a three-mirror antenna system. The antenna mechanically scans in the vertical plane through the atmospheric limb every 65. 5 seconds. The scan covers a height range from the surface up to 90 km(55 miles). Upon entering the instrument, the signal from the antenna is separated into three signals for processing by different radiometers. The 63-GHz radiometer measures temperature and pressure. The 183-GHz radiometer measures water vapor and ozone. The 205-GHz radiometer measures ClO, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitric acid and water vapor.

Since 1993 ESA has been conducting several feasibility studies and breadboarding activities for the development of a "Microwave Imaging Radiometer with Aperture Synthesis", known as MIRAS. This Earth-observation instrument is intended particularly for the measurement of soil moisture and ocean salinity on a global scale. The relevance of these two geophysical parameters has been repeatedly emphasised by the scientific community and MIRAS could eventually form the core of an ESA Earth Explorer mission devoted to the global measurement of these two parameters.

Microwave scatterometer ... measures the microwave scattering or reflective properties of surfaces. It is also non-imaging, and is specifically designed to measure backscattering. This requires that it detect more detailed spectral information than imaging radar but has reduced spatial resolution and aerial coverage. The surface is scanned in two or more directions, usually by multiple sensors. The primary application of microwave scatterometers is to measure wind vectors (that is, speed and direction) over the ocean surface. This is based on the principle of ocean ’roughness’ being caused by wind and resulting in a characteristic surface pattern which may be identified by its scattering properties.
