MICROWAVE SOUNDER [9 records]

Record 1 2007-07-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Remote Sensing
CONT

The MLS detects naturally occurring microwave thermal emissions from Earth’s limb to create vertical profiles of atmospheric gasses, temperature, pressure and cloud ice. MLS looks 90° from the angle of UARS’ [Upper Atmosphere Research Statellite] orbit. Thermal radiation enters the instrument through a three-mirror antenna system. The antenna mechanically scans in the vertical plane through the atmospheric limb every 65.5 seconds. The scan covers a height range from the surface up to 90 km (55 miles). Upon entering the instrument, the signal from the antenna is separated into three signals for processing by different radiometers. The 63-GHz radiometer measures temperature and pressure. The 183-GHz radiometer measures water vapor and ozone. The 205-GHz radiometer measures ClO, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitric acid and water vapor.

OBS

The latest generation of polar-orbiting meteorological satellites, the TIROS-N/NOAA-6 series, have even more highly developed sensing equipment. One of their most advanced instruments is the TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder(TOVS), consisting of a high resolution infra-red sounder, to produce temperature and moisture content profiles "in depth"... plus a stratospheric sounding unit and also a microwave sounding unit, to take vertical soundings in cloudy atmospheres.

The CERSAT was created in 1991 in order to ensure the off-line processing of ERS-1 and ERS-2 altimeter, scatterometer and microwave sounder data. This task includes acquisition, algorithmic processing, quality control, archiving and distribution of the data to the oceanographic community. In conjunction with scientists of the Département d’Océanographie Spatiale at IFREMER, the CERSAT groups together all skills required to act as a major data distribution and expertise center in oceanography from space.

OBS

... the TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder(TOVS)... consists of three instruments : the High-Resolution Infrared Sounder-2(HIRS-2), the Microwave Sounding Unit(MSU), and the Stratospheric Sounding Unit(SSU). These instruments provide global information about the structure of the atmosphere, including vertical temperature and moisture profiles and fractional cloud cover. Using a completely physical-based method for analysis of the HIRS-2 and MSU radiance data, additional information can be derived, including surface skin temperature, total vertically integrated ozone amount, outgoing longwave radiation, and precipitation estimates.
