Record 1 2022-11-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
CONT

In mid-continent North America during January and February, the following weather sequence is common. There is an increasing evening cloudiness with rising temperatures and a falling barometer. In the middle of the night, rain begins and continues through mid-morning on the next day. The rain then changes to snow, which accumulates to a depth of several inches by evening. Barometric pressure is rising and the snowfall tapers off and stops before midnight. The temperature falls during the night.

To read this map, one must first put its parts together in the mind, seeing it as a chain tying together the Great Lakes and the Mississippi Valley. The proposed canal reaches across a Mid-Continent Divide to connect the "Chicago Creek" with the Illinois River.

CONT

Note that beaches themselves were new to the lakefront--before the Sanitary and Ship Canal breached the Mid-Continent Divide, it was just too unsafe to bathe or swim in the lake.

English

Subject field(s)

OBS

A same designation could refer to a geographic or a geologic entity, sometimes with a slight variant in spelling or writing. It is important to distinguish one from the other and write each correctly according to the given context.

OBS

In Fraser Valley, the last major glacial period is termed the Fraser Glaciation(Armstrong et coll., 1965) and it probably represents the same geologic-climatic episod as the Classical Wisconsin glaciation of the mid-continent region.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Noms géologiques ou scientifiques
OBS
