Continuous driving, such as on the interstate, does not offer the regenerative braking system [of hybrid vehicles] an opportunity to energize the battery. It is during stop-and-go driving that hybrids benefit most from this system, often resulting in a significantly higher gas mileage(MPG) rating during city driving than on the highway. The regenerative braking system also makes hybrids ideal for delivery vehicles and city transit buses that operate in stop-and-go conditions all day long.

The outer switch time recorder(OSTR) is a micro-computer-based system developed by CN Technical Research to record and report the arrival and departure of trains as they pass over a predefined point called the outer switch limit. This point is where the pay rate changes from a mileage basis to a time basis or vice-versa depending on train direction. The OSTR records the time of arrival, direction, speed, and the number of axles of every train that goes by.
