The Geographic Board of Canada was set up in 1897 and was succeeded by the Canadian Board on Geographic Names on August 3, 1948. In 1961, the responsibility of naming places was transferred to the provinces, and the names authority was reorganized as the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names(CPCGN) on July 13, 1961. Since 1979, the authority for naming in Indian reserves, national parks, and military reserves is jointly held by the appropriate federal department and the province concerned. In 1984, the territories in turn assumed responsibility for naming the entities in their own jurisdiction. In March 2000, the national coordinating body for toponymic activities became the Geographical Names Board of Canada(GNBC).

Canada's export control guidelines were adopted as a national regime consistent with our international obligations as specified by COCOM(the Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Strategic Export Controls) of which Canada had been a member since 1950. In 1916, Sir Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook, a Canadian who had settled in England, took it upon himself to form a committee that would oversee the creation of an official pictorial record of Canada's effort in the First World War, to be known as the Canadian War Memorials. A similar undertaking was initiated by H. O. McCurry, the director of the National Gallery of Canada from 1939 to 1955, to record the Canadian military presence in the Second World War, resulting in what would be known as the Canadian War Records Collection. A monumental building to house the two war collections, designed by the British architect E. A. Rickards, was also proposed, but the ambitious project was never realized. By 1950 the combined collections from the two wars numbered over 5, 000 works. The majority of them were transferred to the Canadian War Museum in 1971.

NATO has a vast network of support staff. The International Military Staff(IMS) is responsible for making the high ranking political and military decisions a reality. A General or Flag Officer of a Member State elected by the Military Committee heads the IMS. This officer, the Director of the International Military Staff(DIMS), is responsible for the coordination and oversight of the IMS. The IMS consists of military personnel who have been assigned to NATO to work for the collective good of the Alliance and not their own country.

The Committee of Imperial Defence was an important(albeit ad hoc) part of the government of Great Britain and the British Empire from just after the Second Boer War until the start of World War II. It was responsible for research, and some co-ordination, on issues of military strategy. It was established in 1904 by Arthur Balfour, then British Prime Minister, as an advisory committee for the Prime Minister, one that would be small and flexible; it replaced the Cabinet's decrepit Defence Committee.

Military judges adjudicate at courts martial and other military proceedings such as the judicial review of persons held in pre-trial custody.... The requirement for military judges to be independent of the military chain of command was set out by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1992 in its decision in R. v. Genereux. The necessary judicial hallmarks of security of tenure, financial and institutional independence for military judges are guaranteed in the National Defence Act. Military judges are appointed by the Governor in Council for a fixed term of five years, which is renewable upon the request of the military judge. Military judges are only removable by the Governor in Council upon the recommendation of an independent Inquiry Committee.
