[National Defence Act (NDA)] Section 275 states: "The Canadian Forces, any unit or other element thereof and any officer or non-commissioned member, with materiel, are liable to be called out for service in aid of the civil power in any case in which a riot or disturbance of the peace, beyond the powers of the civil authorities to suppress, prevent or deal with and requiring that service, occurs or is, in the opinion of an attorney general, considered as likely to occur."

In Canada, there is a distinction made between "aid to the civil power" and "assistance to civil authorities. "The former expression refers to military aid provided to the provincial police forces to restore and maintain law and order. The latter encompasses all other forms of assistance the military gives to the civil community. Examples include search and rescue operations, counter-terrorism response, emergencies(natural and man-induced), fisheries and border protection, humanitarian assistance, counter-drug operations, arms smuggling, illegal immigrants, environmental surveillance and special events.

The expression "aid of the civil power" is used in some texts because it appears in the National Defence Act. Even after the 1985 revision of the Act, the use of the preposition "of" continues to be used, even though the more appropriate expression is "aid to the civil power."

The Canadian Forces Electronic Warfare Centre(CFEWC) exists to deliver comprehensive EW support to CF military operations. CFEWC is endeavouring to be the expert authority on technical EW matters within the Canadian Forces. In 1990, the Electronic Warfare Operational Support Centre(EWOSC) project was initiated with the intent of consolidating operational, intelligence and engineering support to the CF EW community. Under the initial phase of the EWOSC project(IEWOSC), a centralized CF EW database was created, the environmental integrated support stations were established, EW threat analysis was begun and a common logistics and administrative support cell was stood up. The Canadian Forces Electronic Warfare Centre(CFEWC) was established to encompass these capabilities within facilities constructed at the Communication Research Canada(CRC)-Shirley's Bay Campus. The initial construction was completed in 1994. CFEWC is mandated with the maintenance and development of the CF Electronic Warfare Database(CFEWDB).

The naval and military establishments in Penetanguishene operated for 39 years, from 1817 to 1856. In the summer of 1951, the Chamber of Commerce of Penetanguishene decided to develop the site of the old establishment as an historical and recreation park. It restored the remaining buildings, the officer’s quarters, and opened a scenic road along the bay. It was called the Historic Naval and Military Establishments. Its name has been changed just recently to Discovery Harbour and it is a picturesque scene covered with old buildings and horse drawn carriages.
