The United States Military Group (USMILGP) is the Security Assistance Office (SAO) for the Department of Defense.

The MILGP's mission is to effectively manage all security assistance programs to include Foreign Military Sales(FMS), International Military Education and Training(IMET), transfer of Excess Defense Articles(EDA), Foreign Military Financing(FMF), Global Peace Operations Initiative(GPOI) and any other activities involving U. On October 12, 2007 Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the creation of an Independent Panel on Canada's Future Role in Afghanistan, which will review, analyse and make recommendations on Canada's engagement in Afghanistan beyond February 2009. The panel has been asked to consider four options, including : To continue training the Afghan army and police so that Canada can begin withdrawing its forces in February 2009; To focus on reconstruction and have forces from another country take over security in Kandahar; To shift Canadian security and reconstruction efforts to another region in Afghanistan; and To withdraw all Canadian military personnel except a minimal force to protect aid workers and diplomats. The panel may also identify and pursue additional options.

On a demandé au groupe d'examiner les quatre possibilités suivantes : continuer à entraîner l'armée et la police afghanes pour que le Canada puisse commencer, en février 2009, le retrait de ses forces; concentrer ses efforts sur la reconstruction et laisser les forces d'un autre pays prendre la relève en matière de sécurité à Kandahar; déployer les efforts canadiens en matière de sécurité et de reconstruction dans une autre région d'Afghanistan; retirer le personnel militaire canadien mais laisser une toute petite force pour protéger les travailleurs de l'aide et les diplomates. Le groupe pourra également identifier des options supplémentaires afin d'aider à diriger les politiques canadiennes.
