A radar in which the return signals are the echoes obtained by reflection from the target.

Primary radar reads the reflected returns only.... Primary radar obtains slant-range information on the "target" from the time difference between sending and receiving the reflection. Pilot Balloon slide rules... were used by meteorologists in the weather services and military units of the United Kingdom to determine the upper wind velocities from an ascending hydrogen or helium filled Pilot Balloon... The position of the Pilot Balloon is tracked by means of one or two theodolites at one minute intervals. The Pilot Balloon slide rule is used to convert the observed azimuth and elevation readings into wind velocity and direction records. The use of slide rules and plotting boards was abandoned with the wide spread adoption of computers and programs to do the calculations, as well as the decline in the use of optical pilot balloon theodolites.

Satellite navigation.... which has been developed over the last thirty years or so, essentially for military purposes originally, enables anyone with a receiver capable of picking up signals emitted by a constellation of satellites to instantly determine their position in time and space very accurately. The operating principle is simple : the satellites in the constellation are fitted with an atomic clock measuring time very accurately. The satellites emit personalised signals indicating the precise time the signal leaves the satellite. The ground receiver, incorporated for example into a mobile phone, has in its memory the precise details of the orbits of all the satellites in the constellation. By reading the incoming signal, it can thus recognise the particular satellite, determine the time taken by the signal to arrive and calculate the distance from the satellite. Once the ground receiver receives the signals from at least four satellites simultaneously, it can calculate the exact position.

This name was given in the imperialist era to those territories which a State unilaterally proclaimed to be an area which it intended to bring under its sovereignty by gradually appropriating it through actual occupation, or which two (or more) States delimited inter se with the same purpose.

A "sphere of interest" differs only in direction of emphasis from a "sphere of influence". A State asserts a sphere of interest in a particular region when it claims to possess in that region exclusive economic or financial concessions or exclusive rights of exploitation, which it will not allow other Powers to exercise.
