Land mines are a fundamental impediment to post-conflict reconstruction and development. Yet, mine action programs which focus narrowly on eliminating or limiting the devastating impacts of these weapons, risk over looking the complex peace building and developmental needs of countries infected by land mines. To be effective, mine action programs require a greater understanding of the socio-economic impacts of land mines as well as a longer-term and coordinated strategy among key actors working in this field. To date, MAP has concentrated on improving the effectiveness of mine action research and policy in Southern Africa, especially in Angola and Mozambique. The ICBL was launched in October 1992 by a group of six non-governmental organizations : Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. These founding organizations witnessed the horrendous effect of mines on the communities they were working with in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America and saw how mines hampered and even prevented their development efforts in these countries. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact. 1, record 9, English, - International%20Campaign%20to%20Ban%20Landmines

1, record 27, French, - liaison%20dans%20la%20constitution%20d%27%C3%A9lectrodes

In eastern Canada problems specifically related to deep mining are beginning to manifest themselves. As the Cape Breton Development Corporation(CBDC) extends both multi-and single-seam coal extraction beyond 700 m below seabed, the problems will become more pronounced. Strata mechanics research at the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory has been directed towards the evaluation of roadway support systems; assessment of existing mining practices related to gateroads and packing systems; mining subsidence; gas/rock outbursts; and field instrumentation to evaluate mine stability by gathering data on deformation and in situ stress. 2, record 29, English, - rock%2Fgas%20outburst

1, record 29, French, - coup%20de%20toit%20et%20d%C3%A9gagement%20de%20grisou
