The bedrock which underlies the overburden is an important consideration and may control the contaminant migration pathway. For example, a porous sandstone formation may decrease travel times to the biosphere, particularly if the facility [an abandoned mine used for the disposal of low-level radioactive wastes] is in a groundwater recharge zone. 7, record 1, English, - bedrock

The ultrasonic-aided leachate treatment process involves enhanced chemical treatment of acidic soil leachate solutions. These solutions, also known as acid mine drainage, are caused by the oxidation and dissolution of sulfide-bearing wastes, which produces sulfuric acid. 3, record 7, French, - produit%20de%20lixiviation%20acide

If the fundamental principle guiding management is only permanent disposal, then options for waste management will be very limited since all management solutions must meet the safety and environmental standards set out by regulatory authorities. For example, considerations of such factors as volume, the disruption which removal might cause, costs and local preferences may make long-term management in situ a practical option for some of the existing wastes. The Task Force feels the uranium mine and mill tailings and the phosphogypsum wastes are best dealt with in this manner and that in situ management should at least be considered for several other waste deposits... 2, record 9, English, - in%20situ%20management

Extraction de l'uranium. [...] 2, record 10, French, - d%C3%A9chet%20de%20raffinage%20d%27uranium

Low-level radioactive wastes can exist in solid liquid or gaseous form. Any solid waste may give off a radioactive gas, as in the case of Radium 226 which gives off Radon 222 when it undergoes alpha decay. Water flowing through a solid waste may leach out soluble radioactive material(e. g., the acid leachates of some uranium mine tailings). As well, solid fine particulates of radioactive waste may take the form of a dust and be carried away on the wind, as in the case in the erosion of mine tailings. Equally, non-radioactive dust particles in the atmosphere can be contaminated with radon daughters as a result of electrostatic attraction. The Konrad mine has some geological features which make it very suitable for disposal of certain types of radioactive waste.... Geotechnical properties of the rock allow construction of disposal caverns of adequate volume. Galleries containing wastes in drums or contaminated components can be backfilled and sealed, as well as the rest of the mine, including the two shafts. 1, record 20, English, - seal%20a%20gallery
