A system of mining in which the distinguishing feature is the winning of 50 percent or more of the coal or ore in the first working. The coal or ore is mined in rooms separated by narrow ribs or pillars. The coal or ore in the pillars is won by subsequent working, which may be likened to top slicing, in which the roof is caved in successive blocks. The first working in rooms is an advancing, and the winning of the rib(pillar) a retreating method. The rooms are driven parallel with one another, and the room faces may be extended parallel, at right angles, or at an angle to the dip. 1, record 3, English, - room%2Dand%2Dpillar

9, record 26, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20d%27abattage%20par%20chambres%2Dmagasins

A stoping method in which relatively thin blocks of ore are caused to cave by successively undermining small panels. The ore deposit is developed by a series of sublevels spaced at vertical intervals of 18 to 25 or 30 feet and occasionally more.... The sublevels are developed by connecting the raises with a longitudinal subdrift from which timbered slice drifts are driven right and left opposite the raises to the ore boundaries or to the limits of the block. Usually alternate drifts are driven first, and caving back from them is begun and continued while the intermediate slices are being driven. The caving is begun at the ends of the slices by blasting out cuts and retreating in the same manner toward the raises.... Successively lower sublevels are developed and caved back until the entire block has been mined. 6, record 29, English, - sublevel%20caving

Ore grades are somewhat variable. The lowest grade of working deposit in western countries appears to be... [a] mine working 0. 2% Ni ore. This low grade can be compared with the very high grade sections of some Western Australian deposits that run about 12% Ni. This line pipe used to transport mined ore consists of two pipes, one inside the other, the inner one being harder than the outside one which is formed around it. Its main feature is its strength and its resistance to wear that normally would be caused by the abrasive ore. "600" is probably a patent number. This information was provided by Prudential Steel in Calgary which imports the line pipes from Germany. 2, record 37, English, - Solidresist%20600%20line%20pipe

[In] base metal mines(...) a large proportion of the ore reserves is found in pillars left between previously mined stopes. These pillars are usually mined using the undercut-and-fill method which is especially suited to unstable ground conditions. Starting at the top of the mining zone the ore is removed in horizontal slices and replaced by backfill to sustain the walls of the adjacent stopes. A wooden mat braced by posts is used to support the backfill so that the ore underneath can be removed.(...) In one mine, the conventional undercut-and-fill technique was modified by suspending the wooden mat on rock bolts anchored to the crown pillar, rather than supporting it on posts. 2, record 39, English, - undercut%20and%20fill%20mining
