When these particles drift around the Earth, they do not remain on common field lines unless the geomagnetic field distribution is axially symmetric. This effect has been called "drift shell splitting"... A drift shell is uniquely determined by the coordinate pair(Bm, Lm) as a surface formed by segments of magnetic field lines between conjugate mirror points. Therefore, drift shells which are tangent to one another or cut one another at a given longitude or local time where they have a common segment of field line, generally are separate from one another at a different longitude or local time---in Roederer's terms these drift shells "split". But since these drift shells are different entities from the outset, there is no real need to infer a notion of splitting. 2, record 6, English, - shell%20splitting

On the left, a standard measure of gyro sensitivity is used : the factor by which the Earth rotation effect is greater than that from quantum(photon) noise over one hour. This is a big factor(the graph is coloured relatively "hot"), and on that basis the results we obtained at Cashmere from the C-II gyro indicate that on this criterion it is more sensitive than all others, such a reported atomic gyros. Note that the perimeter is important, and the mirror finesse also, though less so. 3, record 7, English, - gyro%27s%20perimeter

The performance of large, ground-based optical telescopes is limited by the quality of the image that can be delivered to the final detector(or camera). The telescope and its protective dome create atmospheric variations due to thermal mismatch with the local environment. This "dome seeing" effect reduces performance because it results in a blurring of the incoming image. This effect can be minimized by allowing bulk airflow across the mirror, but this comes at the price of wind buffeting of the structure, which also reduces performance. 2, record 8, English, - dome%20seeing%20effect

When the coin is rotated in good lighting there appears to be a slight dullness or halo around the monarch's bust or design elements in the open fields. The lustre that is protected by the letters near the periphery is distinctly different. The same is true for mirror-like fields, i. e. the quality of the mirror effect is much better in the protected areas. The dulling effect is a result of the very lightest amount of contact of the coin with other objects, enough to disrupt the lustre. 1, record 9, English, - halo%20effect

Detection relies entirely on echoes returned by the main rotor blades which do yield a significant Doppler effect. Experience has shown that rotor blades, whether metal or plastic, behave like mirrors in terms of reflecting electromagnetic radiation. In other words, a blade will only give a usable return to the transmitter location if it is perpendicular to line connecting blade and transmitter. At the receiver, a series of return pulses can be detected, each corresponding to the passage of a blade. By analogy with the illumination of a rotating mirror, this pulsed return pattern is known as "blade flash". 1, record 10, English, - blade%20flash

1, record 10, French, - %C3%A9clair%20de%20pale
