MIRROR INSTRUMENT [12 records]

Record 1 2023-02-01

Subject field(s)
  • Spacecraft
CONT

GOES-9, a three axis stabilized spacecraft, remains stationary in space which allows the [imager and sounder] instruments to be continuously pointed at the earth. The scanning system moves back and forth(i. e., east to west and then west to east) as it moves north to south. While the spacecraft is stationary, it is not absolutely still. Earth location and registration accuracy are [affected] by orbital motions, instrument motion, and thermal distortion. A complicated set of navigation(earth location) and registration(image-to-image location of a landmark) correction schemes are necessary to compensate for these effects.... The registration schemes briefly are : 1) image motion compensation(IMC) and 2) mirror motion compensation(MMC). The IMC removes spacecraft orbit and attitude motion from each image. The MMC automatically corrects for the predictable effects of the instrument mirror motions.

Although there are a number of on-board calibration means not all necessary parameters are accessible. These parameters are subject to on-ground calibration and are not supposed to change from ground to orbit. The most important measurements to be done on ground are [:] the measurement of the diffuser BSDF [Bidirectional Scutter Distribution Function] for the wavelength range of interest [;] the characterisation of the polarisation response of the instrument as a function of the optical path(normal observation path and sun observation path), scan mirror position(the scan mirror reflectivity for S and P polarisation is a function of the mirror angle), and wavelength.

CONT

An instrument located at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory on Mount Hopkins, Arizona, at an altitude of 2, 606 m(8, 550 ft). It employed six mirrors, each 1. 82 m(72 in.) across, working together to give the equivalent of a single mirror 4. 45 m(176 in.) in aperture. In 1998, the MMT was used in a pioneering demonstration of nulling interferometry to image the dust cloud around Betelgeuse. Following this, the telescope was closed and work began to upgrade it by replacing the 6 small mirrors with a single mirror 6. 5 m in diameter.

OBS

The MMT kept its original name after it was converted to a single 6.5m diameter mirror on May 20, 2000.

Preprocessing is an important and diverse set of image preparation programs that act to offset problems with the band data and recalculate DN [Digital Number] values that minimize these problems. Among the programs that optimize these values are atmospheric correction(affecting the DNs of surface materials because of radiance from the atmosphere itself, involving attenuation and scattering) ;Sun illumination geometry; surface-induced geometric distortions; spacecraft velocity and attitude variations(roll, pitch, and yaw) ;effects of Earth rotation, elevation, curvature(including skew effects), abnormalities of instrument performance(irregularities of detector response and scan mode such as variations in mirror oscillations) ;loss of specific scan lines(requires destriping), and others. Once performed on the raw data, these adjustments require appropriate radiometric and geometric corrections.

Nephoscope in which the image of the clouds produced by a mirror is observed.

CONT

The mirror nephoscope consists essentially of a horizontal disk of black glass engraved with concentric circles. A vertical pointer adjustable to various known heights is mounted on the rim of the instrument. The pointer is so placed by the observer that the image of the cloud under observation is in line with the pointer and the centre of the disk. The image is kept in line with the pointer as it moves, and the direction of motion is read off from a scale on the rim of the circle. Another type of mirror nephoscope has a mirror on which the only marking is a centre point.

OBS

nephoscope : An instrument for determining the direction of cloud motion. There are two basic designs of nephoscope : the direct-vision nephoscope and the mirror nephoscope. Also called nepheloscope.

OBS

There are several types of nephoscope: the comb nephoscope developed by Besson; the mirror nephoscope developed by Finemann; and the grid nephoscope, a variation on the comb modified by the Norwegians.

OBS

In one source, the Finemann nephoscope is "a mirror nephoscope developed by Finemann". In the other source, Fineman nephoscope is an "adaptation of the mirror nephoscope". Compare Fineman nephoscope.
