One type of scanner is called a whiskbroom scanner also referred to as across-track scanners. It uses rotating mirrors to scan the landscape below from side to side perpendicular to the direction of the sensor platform, like a whiskbroom. The width of the sweep is referred to as the sensor swath. The rotating mirrors redirect the reflected light to a point where a single or just a few sensor detectors are grouped together. Whiskbroom scanners with their moving mirrors tend to be large and complex to build. The moving mirrors create spatial distortions that must be corrected with preprocessing by the data provider before image data is delivered to the user. An advantage of whiskbroom scanners is that they have fewer sensor detectors to keep calibrated as compared to other types of sensors. 5, record 1, English, - across%2Dtrack%20scanner

[The] Multi-Spectral Scanner... is a line scanning device which records from four bands, two in the visible and two in the near infrared spectral bands. The system is comprised of a telescope, a mirror which reflects ground radiation onto a bank of 24 electro-optical sensors, band filters and a sampling system, an internal calibration system and various devices which ensure an orderly stream of digital data for each pixel and spectral band. It images six scan lines in each of the four spectral bands simultaneously giving a 24 scan-line total. 3, record 2, English, - linear%20scanning

The mirror nephoscope consists essentially of a horizontal disk of black glass engraved with concentric circles. A vertical pointer adjustable to various known heights is mounted on the rim of the instrument. The pointer is so placed by the observer that the image of the cloud under observation is in line with the pointer and the centre of the disk. The image is kept in line with the pointer as it moves, and the direction of motion is read off from a scale on the rim of the circle. Another type of mirror nephoscope has a mirror on which the only marking is a centre point. 5, record 3, English, - mirror%20nephoscope

When these particles drift around the Earth, they do not remain on common field lines unless the geomagnetic field distribution is axially symmetric. This effect has been called "drift shell splitting"... A drift shell is uniquely determined by the coordinate pair(Bm, Lm) as a surface formed by segments of magnetic field lines between conjugate mirror points. Therefore, drift shells which are tangent to one another or cut one another at a given longitude or local time where they have a common segment of field line, generally are separate from one another at a different longitude or local time---in Roederer's terms these drift shells "split". But since these drift shells are different entities from the outset, there is no real need to infer a notion of splitting. 2, record 4, English, - shell%20splitting

The helical aperture facsimile transmitter is fairly common on low-to mid-volume fax units. The original is roller fed over a flatbed copy platen and illuminated by an area lamp. Lens and mirror optics reflect and focus one scan line of the moving document at a time, first through a fixed horizontal slit aperture, and then through a rotating helical aperture. The rotating of the helical aperture produces one lateral scan of the original per revolution, with the passing light being focused a final time onto a photocell for conversion to an electrical signal. 1, record 6, English, - rotating%20helical%20aperture%20scanner

Detection relies entirely on echoes returned by the main rotor blades which do yield a significant Doppler effect. Experience has shown that rotor blades, whether metal or plastic, behave like mirrors in terms of reflecting electromagnetic radiation. In other words, a blade will only give a usable return to the transmitter location if it is perpendicular to line connecting blade and transmitter. At the receiver, a series of return pulses can be detected, each corresponding to the passage of a blade. By analogy with the illumination of a rotating mirror, this pulsed return pattern is known as "blade flash". 1, record 11, English, - blade%20flash

1, record 11, French, - %C3%A9clair%20de%20pale
