MIRROR MACHINE [5 records]

Record 1 2016-11-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Thermonuclear fusion
DEF

Specific approach under investigation in the field of controlled fusion where the plasma is confined by means of an externally imposed magnetic field with magnetic mirrors at each end.

OBS

magnetic mirror machine approach : term and definition standardized by ISO.

OBS

magnetic mirror machine approach : term extracted from the “Glossaire de l'énergie nucléaire” and reproduced with permission of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Fusion thermonucléaire
DEF

Record 2 2016-02-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Science and Technology
  • Atomic Physics
DEF

Type of magnetic configuration where the field lines close upon themselves outside the plasma region. [Definition standardized by ISO.]

OBS

It includes: mirror configurations, cusped configurations and hybrid configurations.

OBS

The mirror machine [fusion reactor], an "open-ended" system in which the plasma is held trapped by repeated reflections of its particles between magnetic mirrors(regions of intensified magnetic field at each end of the confinement chamber).

OBS

open magnetic configuration; open configuration: terms standardized by ISO.

Key term(s)
  • open ended configuration

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sciences et techniques nucléaires
  • Physique atomique
DEF

OBS

configuration ouverte : terme normalisé par l'ISO.

Record 3 2003-09-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Glass
  • Glazing Materials (Constr.)
CONT

It was decided to grind the edges of the mirror to make it truly circular, as the rough cast glass was some 3/8 inch longer on one diameter than on the other. This operation called for setting up an auxiliary cast iron grinding wheel to operate against the periphery of the turntable of the main machine. Two or three nights work with this apparatus gave us a truly circular edge with a rough ground surface. Next, several nights were devoted to smoothing up both faces of the mirror, and bringing these two planes to approximate parallelism....

Key term(s)
  • rough-cast glass

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sortes de verre
  • Matériaux verriers (Construction)
OBS

Record 4 2001-11-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Sports Equipment and Accessories
  • Weightlifting
DEF

[A machine that helps] to improve lower body strength and power.

OBS

An adjacent mirror is provided with this machine.

OBS

Technique: Stand facing plates with feet shoulder width apart, toes pointed slightly out, back flat, abdominal muscles tight, chin level, hands on hand grips, shoulders firmly against pads and hips aligned slightly behind shoulders. In a smooth and controlled manner, descend into full squat position (thighs parallel to floor). In same smooth and controlled manner, immediately drive upward from hips until knees are almost straight, returning to starting position.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Équipement et accessoires de sport
  • Haltérophilie
DEF

OBS

Renseignements obtenus auprès d'un centre d'entraînement physique spécialisé.

Record 5 1984-12-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Computer Graphics
DEF

A feature of some machine control units that provides for the reversing of all controls programmed for a specific axis(usually X) by means of a switch. This means that a single program tape can produce two mirror image parts.
