MIRROR-LIKE [9 records]

Record 1 2023-07-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Glass Industry
  • Photoelectricity and Electron Optics
CONT

There are quite a few different types of electrochromic glass : some merely darken(like photochromic sunglasses, which turn darker in sunlight), some darken and become translucent, while others become mirror-like and opaque.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Industrie du verre
  • Photo-électricité et optique électronique
CONT

Le verre électrochromique est un verre dynamique, qui a la propriété de changer de couleur de manière réversible lorsqu'une charge électrique y est appliquée.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Coining
  • Coins and Bank Notes
  • Numismatics
DEF

The brightness on the surface of an uncirculated numismatic object resulting from the centrifugal flow of metal caused by striking with dies.

OBS

Mint lustre or bloom is somewhat frosty in appearance as opposed to the mirror-like smoothness of the field of a proof. Since the lustre of a coin can vary considerably due to factors such as wear, polishing of dies or blanks, exposure to chemicals, humidity, or temperature extremes, etc., it is an important indicator of the condition or grade of a coin. The qualities of lustre are often described by such adjectives as fiery, frosty, light frost, heavy frost, satiny, flat looking, matte, semi-matte, and so on. Although normally brilliant, with time, lustre may become dull, spotted, or discoloured. Lustre is easily worn through with the slightest amount of circulation and strong chemical cleaners will destroy it. Once the mint lustre is gone it cannot be properly restored.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Lighting
  • Photography
DEF

... lighting [that depends] on the position of the viewer as well as the direction of light and orientation of the triangle being rendered.

CONT

Shining a spotlight into a dark corner of a room onto a TV set and looking at the hot spots on the picture tube will show you specular lighting. Specular lighting captures the mirror-like properties of an object so effects such as reflection and glare are achievable.

Key term(s)
  • specular light

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éclairage
  • Photographie
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Coins and Bank Notes
  • Numismatics
  • Coining
DEF

The result of a hint of circulation on a coin that may otherwise appear uncirculated, as judged by markings, etc.

OBS

When the coin is rotated in good lighting there appears to be a slight dullness or halo around the monarch's bust or design elements in the open fields. The lustre that is protected by the letters near the periphery is distinctly different. The same is true for mirror-like fields, i. e. the quality of the mirror effect is much better in the protected areas. The dulling effect is a result of the very lightest amount of contact of the coin with other objects, enough to disrupt the lustre.

DEF

A series of minute lines or scratches, usually visible in the field portion of a coin, and caused by abrasive cleaning, polishing, or other kinds of mishandling, including poor or loose storage in abrasive holders. Most evident on coins with mirror-like fields, they are harder to detect under fluorescent lighting.

OBS

Not to be confused with die scratches which are raised on the coin.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Solar Energy
  • Photoelectricity and Electron Optics
  • Semiconductors (Electronics)
CONT

Amorphous silicon solar cells having the following characteristics will be produced by 1987: (1) stable pin multijunction cells with a 12%-13% air mass (AM)I intrinsic efficiency that is stable to within 10% after 20 years of continuous operation and at least 10 cm x 10 cm in area; (2) an interconnected single-junction cell module of at least 7%-8% AMI efficiency and at least 40 cm x 30 cm in area.

CONT

Usually a-Si solar cells are constructed on flat substrates with smooth mirror-like surfaces, such as stainless steel plate made by electrical and mechanical polishing.

OBS

The term "amorphous silicon solar cell" has been taken from "Canadian Solar Energy Review", by J.P. Rollefson (National Research Council of Canada).

CONT
