MISCONCEPTION [14 records]

Record 1 2022-02-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cotton Industry
CONT

Within the industry, there has been arisen a misconception that high-capacity ginning results in lower-quality fiber. However, when the ginnery and all its sub-systems have been properly designed, operated, and maintained, this has been shown not to be the case. Increased ginning capacity without compromised quality will continue to be one of the major goals of the industry, since it will result in lower per-bale ginning costs and more cotton being processed in a given amount of time.

A common misconception is that aerosol filters work like microscopic sieves in which only particles smaller than the holes can get through. This view may be appropriate for the liquid filtration of solid particles, but it is not how aerosol filtration works.... particles are removed by a fibrous filter when they collide and attach to the surface of the fibers.

Subject field(s)
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Environmental Management
CONT

One untested hypothesis in oil spill response is that "chemical dispersants do not work effectively in cold water. "This is due to the general misconception that cold water inhibits dispersant effectiveness(DE) and the lack of experimental data to indicate otherwise. To address this issue, the U. S. Minerals Management Service(MMS)... conducted two series of dispersant experiments in very cold water at Ohmsett... [Both] Corexit 9500 and Corexit 9527 dispersants were more than 90% effective in dispersing the fresh and weathered crude oils tested [and dispelled] the thought that chemical dispersants cannot be effective in cold water.

Subject field(s)
  • Artificial Intelligence
DEF

An erroneous conception or mistaken notion.

CONT

Another solution is to gather a great deal of information about likely errors or misconceptions for a given domain and a given population of knowledge and to include these observed distortions as primitives of the modeling language.

CONT

It is relatively easy to tell when a student is making an error; the more difficult task for the tutor is to determine the underlying misconceptions responsible for that error. And once the source of the error has been found, the tutor has to figure out the most efficient way to correct the student’s misunderstanding.

CONT

Misconceptions are modeled as deep cognitive structures that can explain erroneous (and correct) answers.

OBS

... a bug is an error in a computer program, while a misconception is some conceptualization in the student's mind that can lead to a program bug.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Intelligence artificielle
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Geophysics
  • Geothermal Energy
  • Thermal Springs - Uses
CONT

The most significant factor affecting fluid expansion pressurization is the regional geothermal gradient. Higher geothermal gradients lead to greater fluid expansion with depth and steeper unloading limb effective stress relationships.

CONT

A popular misconception is that a regional thermal gradient(deduced from fluid inclusions in sphalerite) exists among the MVT [Mississippi Valley-type] districts of the Ozark region, apparently linking them to a common regional hydrologic flow model with an Arkoma Basin fluid source.

OBS

regional thermal gradient: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géophysique
  • Énergie géothermique
  • Thermalisme
CONT

CONT

[...] un skin [...] modifie toute l'apparence du logiciel : fond, boutons, barres, glissières, curseurs, etc.

The tutor’s only use of the diagnosis ... is to help select [the] next action. This perspective tempts us to view the diagnostic component of the tutor as a mechanism for mapping tutorial situations onto instructional actions....

CONT

Once a possible need for information has been identified, the diagnoser will have to explain it in terms of either a lack of knowledge or a misconception on the part of the user.... If the diagnoser does find such an explanation, a formal description of the current user need is sent to the coach, who will plan an intervention to meet this need....

CONT

The function of the diagnostic component of an intelligent tutoring system is to test whether the expectations presupposed by the tutor’s current plan are consistent with its current model of the student.

CONT

DEF

[a student model] that abstracts how the student’s behavior is critically different from that of an expert.

CONT

... the differences between the lists of issues respectively applied by the student and the expert ... provide information for updating the student model. In WEST, the differential model records how often each issue was used appropriately and how often it was overlooked. There is no notion of erroneous issues .... Pedagogically, WEST adopts a cautious attitude and intervenes only when there is good evidence for a weakness....

CONT

... a «differential» student model provides the capability, in principle, of recognizing and then acting upon a student's misconception, for example that "while" may be substituted for "if" in certain situations in Pascal, knowledge used by Proust..., or that pieces of program plan may be systematically but incorrectly interleaved.
