The genetic barrier which separates Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli is primarily recombinational. The structural component of this barrier is genomic sequence divergence. The mismatch repair enzymes act as inhibitors of interspecies recombination, whereas the SOS system acts as an inducible positive regulator. These genetic systems control also the genomic stability in bacterial populations.

L'étude des barrières génétiques entre différentes espèces équivaut à demander comment ces espèces deviennent génétiquement isolées. La barrière génétique entre Salmonella typhymurium et Escherichia coli est essentiellement une barrière à la recombinaison. La composante structurale de cette barrière est la différence de leur ADN génomique. Le système de réparation des mésappariements (SRM) agit comme inhibiteur de la recombinaison interspécifique alors que le système SOS agit comme régulateur positif inductible.
