MISSILE FLIGHT TIME [5 records]

Record 1 2008-04-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Target Acquisition
  • Missiles and Rockets
CONT

If targets are to be engaged at a distance, then the time of flight affords the enemy time to detect the missile launch and return fire, either destroying the vehicle or breaking the operator's target lock, thus wasting the missile.

Key term(s)
  • target lock on

French

Domaine(s)
  • Acquisition d'objectif
  • Missiles et roquettes
CONT

S'il faut prendre des objectifs à une certaine distance, la durée de trajet donne à l'ennemi le temps de détecter le lancement du missile et de riposter et de détruire le véhicule ou rompre le verrouillage sur la cible, ce qui cause la perte du missile.

Key term(s)
  • verrouillage sur l'objectif
  • accrochage de la cible

DEF

A solid fuel rocket motor with two nozzles protruding through the body of the missile at 3-degree angles.

OBS

During this time, it provides all the momentum necessary for the full flight of the missile.

  • Control Systems (Electronic Instrumentation)
  • Space Centres
CONT

One of the famous stories at Camp Happiness was about the blast deflectors at the Cape Canaveral launch pad. Apparently, the first time a bird was launched, the fin mounted ARW-59 Command Guidance(Range Safety) antennae blew off and down into the tunnel. The debris blew out the tube and up into the overhead power lines, causing loss of power at the entire complex, particularly the Range Safety Officer's Console. While the missile was last seen disappearing into the cloud cover headed down range, a piece of the honeycomb wing washed up on the Florida beach not long after, proving the "Fail Safe" backup system had destructed the bird in flight.

Key term(s)
  • safety officer console

Key term(s)

Record 4 2001-08-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Flight Instruments and Equipment (Aeroindustry)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
  • Navigation Instruments
DEF

A linear accelerometer using a single-degree-of-freedom gyro having a pendulosity along the spin axis that is servo-driven about the input axis at a rate that balances the torque induced by sensed acceleration along the input axis. The angle through which the servoed axis rotates is proportional to the integral of the sensed acceleration.

CONT

The intercontinental ballistic missiles(ICBM) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles(SLBM) developed over the past 50 years have employed successive generations of increasingly accurate inertial guidance systems. The comparatively short time of guided flight and high acceleration levels characteristic of the ballistic missile application place a premium on accelerometer performance to achieve desired weapon system accuracy. To date, the accelerometer design of choice for strategic missiles has been the Pendulous Integrating Gyroscopic Accelerometer(PIGA) instrument, an accelerometer whose origins trace back to the German V2 rocket, and has been refined through several generations of development to achieve unsurpassed performance.
