CONT

Supplemental oxygen can be administered through various ways, including low-flow systems, high-flow devices, positive-pressure ventilation, or extracorporeal oxygenation.... The administration of supplemental oxygen becomes critical when PaO2 [partial pressure of carbon dioxide] falls below 60 mm Hg [millimetres of mercury], at which point the steep portion of the curve indicates a rapid decline in oxygen saturation, leading to inadequate oxygen delivery to tissues.

A unit of pressure equal to the pressure exerted by a column of mercury 1 millimeter high at sea level and at temperature of 0 °C (32 °F).

DEF

CONT

Corn steep water.

OBS

Cleaned corn grain is washed thoroughly and then steeped for 36 to 40 hours in approximately twice its volume of water containing 0. 2% SO2 at a temperature of 46-50 [degrees] C. As the steep water is drawn from the corn it contains between 6 and 9 lbs of solids per 100 lbs of water. The corn should be soft to the touch, but must not be slimy or smeary-in the latter case it was steeped either too hot or too long. The steep liquor is then evaporated [under 25 mm Hg pressure] in a "Swenson" evaporator to what is called heavy steep liquor with a gravity of 16 to 20 [degrees] Bé and containing 50-60% of solids. In this form it is sold to manufacturer of antibiotics who may have their own specifications as to age, gravity and SO2 content.

The pressure exerted by a saturated vapour above its own liquid in a closed container.

CONT

Three facts are important to remember :(1) vapour pressure of a substance at 100°F(38°C) is always higher than the vapour pressure of the substance at 68°F(20°C).(2) Vapour pressures reported in mm Hg are usually very low pressures; 760 mm Hg is equivalent to 14. 7 pounds per square inch.(3) the lower the boiling point of a substance, the higher its vapour pressure.

OBS

[The] vapor pressure [is] usually expressed in millimeters of mercury ...

OBS

The vapor pressure for a compressed gas is expressed in psig. The vapor pressure of commercial propane is 124 psig at 70°F and 286 psig at 130°F.

OBS

It is important to make a distinction between the vapor pressure of a liquid ... and the pressure of a vapor. The vapor pressure of a pure liquid is a unique and characteristic property of the liquid and depends only upon the temperature. A gas or vapor may, on the other hand, exert any pressure within reason, depending upon the volume to which it is confined, provided it is not in contact with its liquid phase.

CONT

In 1956, Harley and Pretorius described a simple discharge detector for gas chromatography based on the electrical properties of a glow discharge, the voltage across the gaseous discharge being a function of the type of gas present. Druyvesteyn and Penning in 1940 reviewed the complex nature of the glow discharge, noting that the discharge is maintained by electrons emitted from the cathode which result from processes related to positive ion bombardment, photoelectric emission, and collisions with excited atoms. When trace quantities of a material eluted from a chromatographic column enter the detector (consisting of a small platinum disk cathode and a tungsten wire anode), a voltage change resulted which was recorded.

OBS

Using neon lamps Pitkethly found... that these detector were current and pressure independent at 1-1. 5 mS and 3-5 mm Hg.... In 1958, Roberts and Hinkle evaluated glow discharge tubes as detectors for compounds in the concentration range of 5-500 ppm and concluded that the detector was not applicable to general-purpose use.... More recently, Wilhite described glow discharge-type devices which act electrically similar to a gas-filled voltage-regulator tube... Riley described the use of an argon purity meter, a glow-type discharge detector, for the determination of small concentrations(0-1500 ppm) of impurity gases in argon.

Thermionic or Electron Impact Detector. In 1957, Ryce and Bryce described a sensitive ionization gauge based on the ionization potentials of vapors. It comprised a filament, a grid, and a plate. The potential difference between the filament and grid accelerated electrons which may ionize any gas in their path. If the grid potential is maintained at a level insufficient to ionize the helium carrier gas... no current flows in the plate circuit. If a potential difference of 18 V is maintained between the filament and the grid, compounds of lower ionization potential in the helium will be ionized and the positive ions produced will yield a cathode current, the current noted being a measure of the ion concentration. Into the modified ionizing chamber, operated at reduced pressure, a small fraction of the column effluent gas stream(less than 0. 5%) was allowed to flow into the gauge through a controlled leak. Over a 0. 02-l. 5 mm Hg pressure range, the sensitivity was approximately proportional to the pressure, and sensitivities in the range of 10[ minus superscript 12] mole were claimed.
