Subject field(s)
  • Materials Engineering
DEF

A composite material in which one constituent is a metal or alloy forming at least one percolating network. The other constituent is embedded in this metal matrix and usually serves as reinforcement.

CONT

X-ray welding of metal-matrix composites.... MMCs are composed of a metal(usually Ti or Al) within which a reinforcing ceramic(usually Al2O3 or SiC) particulate, whisker, or fiber is imbedded. These materials are lighter and have superior mechanical and thermal properties as compared to the base metal and are finding widespread use in many areas. They have great potential for use in the aerospace industry, provided a joining process that maintains the strength of the material can be found.

CONT

OBS

The Future Combat Systems(FCS), formerly known as Future Ground Combat Systems(FGCS) program, an out-growth of the Mobile Tactical Operations Center, will develop network centric concepts for a multi-mission combat system(MMCS). The Future Combat Systems will develop the capability to rapidly project a dominant ground force anywhere in the world within days. This strategically deployable, tactically superior and sustainable force will provide a quick reaction capability if conflicts arise in the 21st century. This requisite capability may require advanced technologies, a revolution in both strategy and tactics, and innovative Industrial teaming.
