For working in space unattached to a spacecraft, astronauts are enabled to move independently using a Manned Manoeuvring Unit(MMU). This snaps onto the back of the life-support system. It lets the astronaut move around in space by firing gas jets. It is operated by the handgrips on the armrests.

[...] le MMU [Manned Manoeuvering Unit] a la forme d'un «sac à dos» haut de 122,5 cm pour 82 cm de largeur et 67 cm de profondeur. Sa masse est de 150 kg au sol. Construit en aluminium, il comporte deux batteries zinc argent [...], un poste de contrôle électronique et un système qui commande 24 petites tuyères, chacune pouvant créer une poussée de 7,5 kg en éjectant de l'azote gazeux stocké sous 210 atmosphères dans deux réservoirs de 75 cm de haut pour 25 cm de diamètre (5,9 kg). Grâce à deux poignées situées au bout de deux bras télescopiques, l'astronaute peut effectuer des mouvements de translation et de rotation et ainsi se déplacer dans toute les directions. L'autonomie est de 468 secondes permettant de créer une impulsion totale de 22 m/s capable d'amener l'astronaute à 75 m de l'orbiteur.

In front of Nelson is the Trunnion Pin Attachment Device (TPAD), basically a tube containing three spring-loaded jaws designed to lock automatically around a pin provided for this purpose on the satellite.

The script called for Nelson to float to within arm's reach of Max's 7-ft.-long, windmill-like solar array panels and fire the minijets on his MMU [Manned Manoeuvering Unit] to match Max's spin of one revolution every 6 min. Using a trunnion-pin attachment device(TPAD), a hollow canister-shaped mechanism strapped like a huge belly button to the chest of his suit, Nelson would gently bump the 5, 000-lb. satellite's protruding trunnion pin(installed for just such a rescue). Three rubber-coated, spring-loaded jaws in Nelson's TPAD were supposed to snap like a mousetrap, firmly locking Max's trunnion into place.

The memory unit provides the initial program load for the Spacelab subsystem, experiment and backup computers; it can also be used to completely reload computer memory if required. The MMU stores various files, time lines and displays. Writing onto the unit during flight is possible. Approximately half of the unit's storage capability is available for software and data supporting Spacelab experiments.
