MOBILE COVERAGE [11 records]

Record 1 2023-10-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Telecommunications
CONT

Evolved EDGE [Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution] provides an enhanced user experience compared to that of basic EDGE when the user moves outside the coverage area of technologies such as UMTS [universal mobile telecommunication system] and Long-Term Evolution(LTE). Evolved EDGE reduces latency from about 135 ms [milliseconds] to 70 ms. Delay-sensitive applications benefit from such a latency reduction.

DEF

A state of [anxiety] caused by having no access to or being unable to use one’s mobile phone.

CONT

Experts say nomophobia could affect up to 53 per cent of mobile phone users, with 48 per cent of women and 58 per cent of men questioned admitting to experiencing feelings of anxiety when they run out of battery or credit, lose their phone or have no network coverage.

French

  • Psychologie (Généralités)
  • Téléphones
DEF

CONT

Radio cells with diameters of 20 to 30 kilometers are known as "macrocells".

CONT

A macrocell provides the largest area of coverage within a mobile network. The antennas for macrocells can be mounted on ground-based masts, rooftops or other existing structures. They must be positioned at a height that is not obstructed by terrain or buildings. Macrocells provide radio coverage over varying distances depending on the frequency used, the number of calls made and the physical terrain.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Radiotéléphonie
CONT

Many of the antennas on board communications spacecraft in geostationary orbit are fixed. Some applications for antennas require the ability to point at different areas. These antennas could be used to support a developing regional communication system after a natural disaster or to support a mobile activity. A new spacecraft antenna pointing mechanism concept is to be investigated. The mechanism could use actuators or similar devices which are configured as a "plunger" or a single axis rotary device. The aim of the project is to configure the pointing mechanism to ensure it is capable of pointing a one metre diameter antenna, with full earth coverage.
