Adaptable textiles, sometimes called "smart" textiles, have very sophisticated devices placed into them, which give them interactive or adaptable functions. The principle is to include a physical or chemical, sensitive and reactive system in the fibres or textiles. This firstly allows the textiles to sense and analyse the changes taking place in the environment, and secondly to react to this information by an action or modification of all kinds. The changes of enzymatic properties are considered to be caused by the following two factors. One is changes of the enzyme itself, and the other is physical and chemical properties of the carriers used for immobilization. The former involves modification of amino acid residues in the active center of the enzyme, conformational changes of the enzyme protein, and changes in the charge on the enzyme, while the latter involves the formation of diffusion layers around immobilized enzymes, steric hindrance effects, and electrostatic interactions between carrier and substrate. 3, record 15, English, - electrostatic%20interaction

Return Flow Pressure Atomizing Oil Burner. This burner is a modification of the pressure atomizing burner; it is also called a modulating pressure atomizer. It has the advantage of wide load range for any given atomizer,... this wide range is accomplished through a return flow nozzle which has an atomizing swirl chamber just ahead of the orifice. Good atomization throughout the load range is attained by maintaining a high rate of oil flow and high pressure drop through the swirl chamber. The excess oil above the load demand is returned from the swirl chamber to the oil storage tank or to the suction of the oil pump. Control of burning rate is effected by varying the oil pressure in both the oil inlet and oil return lines. Except for the atomizer, load range, and method of control, the information given for the straight pressure atomizing burner applies to this burner. 1, record 23, English, - return%20flow%20pressure%20atomizing%20oil%20burner

The foundation for the experimentation process is a database of assertions which O’Shea calls a "theory of instruction" for the domain. Each assertion in the database indicates the expected results of a specific experimental modification performed on the production rules. Results are expressed in terms of possible or definite effects on teaching performance with respect to one goal. For instance, an assertion could say that spending more resources on selecting appropriate problems might improve the performance of students on the post-test. Thus these assertions represent a corpus of possibly useful experiments. After choosing one of the four goals, the system selects all the assertions that propose modifications leading to a possible improvement with respect to that goal; then it executes the changes these assertions suggest. Statistical tests evaluate the variations in performance caused by the modifications, with respect to each of the four goals. The overall improvement of the system is then computed as a linear function of the goals’ respective variations. If a significant improvement is achieved, the modifications are adopted. In addition, as a form of learning involving some serendipity, new assertions are added to the original database to record the effects of the experiment on the different goals. In this way, not only does the system improve, but its ability to set up experiments is also extended. Obviously, it must have had a minimal number of assertions to start with. Figure 6. 6. gives an overview of the flow of information through the self-improving component. 1, record 24, English, - theory%20of%20instruction
