The Technology Exposure Facility(TEF), currently under study by ESA [European Space Agency], is a way of accommodating a wide range of research and development investigations and offering a controlled exposure to the space station environment.... The principal new feature for an exposed payload facility is the presence of a single, multi-purpose robotic servicing capability.... Together with the robotics, the modular architecture of the facility allows on orbit reconfiguration and, more significantly, a "black box" approach to the accommodation of individual payloads.

Parascan is offering more then just workflow automation : the modular system approach allows the functionality being added to be adapted to the requirements of each production site. Integration of the press production planning to drive the pre-press workflow and the ink pre-setting of the presses are special areas of expertise, which allow Parascan to offer a full integration between press and pre-press production.

The SP2's [visual display system] memory also contains complete routes from one airport to another. Lufthansa was the first company to use the fully automated lesson plan on its B. 737-100 simulator in early 1979, in order to fly complete routes in simulator training. The key to this approach is the Modular Advanced Graphics Generation System, or MAGGS, developed by Redifon, which means that the instructor only has to push one button to obtain an entire training program, allowing his full attention to be given to the crew under training.

For diagnosis, the system simply updates the probabilities in the student's matrix with methods from probability theory. When problem classes occur for the first time, ad hoc heuristics generate a seed probability. Kimball claims that the probabilistic approach allows precise measurements of student learning revealing its discontinuities. He suggests that the identification of these discontinuities, which are apparently associated with failures, is an important pedagogical task. Kimball goes into a lengthy technical argument to support the applicability of his probabilistic approach to modeling the student, mainly from the standpoint of independence of the probabilities associated with the various approaches. Many of his concerns actually apply to other modular representations, such as rule-based ones, used more recently for student modeling.

The modular nature of the approach makes it possible to add a four-axis motion mounting, using short-throw hydraulics to reduce the space requirement for the simulator building.
