MODULAR CULTIVATION SYSTEM [4 records]

Record 1 2003-12-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Orbital Stations
  • Research Experiments in Space
CONT

[The] EMCS consists of a gas tight incubator containing two centrifuges with space for 4 Experiment Containers on each rotor; also the life support and water supply system, the illumination and the observation system are located on the rotors. External to the incubator are the Standard Payload Computer (SPLC), the gas supply module and the thermal control system. The flight unit is accommodated in an EXPRESS Rack on the International Space Station. Ground controls will be performed in dedicated Experiment Reference Models, one located in Europe, the other at NASA Ames Research Center.

CONT

[The] EMCS is dedicated to experiments on plants, especially multi-generation (seed-to-seed) experiments and studies on gravity effects on early development and growth, on signal perception and transduction in plant tropisms. Experiments with insects or amphibia as well as studies with cell and tissue cultures are also foreseen in EMCS.

OBS

European modular cultivation system; EMCS : term and abbreviation officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group(ISSOAG).

CONT

The Biotechnology Mammalian Tissue Culture facility has been conceived for research on cell and tissue culture. It will be essential in furthering our understanding of the influence of the cell microenvironment on growth and differentiation. The core of the system will provide robust control of concentration gradients and of mechanical forces thanks to the integration of fluid distribution tools, microsensors, and microactuators. The emphasis is put on the mimicking of organotypical conditions and on the acquisition of data to be used for guided tissue development and differentiation in both space and terrestrial conditions. In addition to this core cultivation subunit, a powerful diagnostics subunit allows for dedicated tools adapted to the tissue undergoing testing. The whole concept is modular in order to support upgrading and adaptation to the requirements of the experimental programme.

The Modular Cultivation System(MCS) is a multi-user capability for research into the early development events in plants; long-term growth stability; gravity influence during early development and growth; perception and signal transduction in plant tropism, as well as providing the possibility for research on insects, amphibia and radiation effects on cells and tissues. The scientific utilisation of MCS will be shared with NASA. MCS will be accommodated in a NASA EXPRESS Rack in the US Laboratory. MCS comprises two major units : Experiment Containers and the multi-purpose cultivation unit.
