CONT

The European Drawer Rack(EDR) provides a modular capability for sub-rack payloads contained in Standard Experiment Drawers(SEDs) and Mid-Deck Lockers(MDLs) accommodated in an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack]. The EDR supports the independent operation of the multiple sub-rack payload hardware as well as the provision of a standardised interface to laboratory resources. It supports payload exchange at SED or MDL level. A fundamental goal of the EDR is to support the development of smaller sub-rack payloads through the provision of accommodation and flight opportunities where quick turnaround mission objectives are required.

The Technology Exposure Facility(TEF), currently under study by ESA [European Space Agency], is a way of accommodating a wide range of research and development investigations and offering a controlled exposure to the space station environment.... The principal new feature for an exposed payload facility is the presence of a single, multi-purpose robotic servicing capability.... Together with the robotics, the modular architecture of the facility allows on orbit reconfiguration and, more significantly, a "black box" approach to the accommodation of individual payloads.

The Material Science Laboratory(MSL) offers a multi-user capability to support scientific research in solidification physics, crystal growth with semi-conductors, measurement of thermophysical properties and the physics of liquid states. MSL occupies about half of an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] in the US Lab, and one ISPR in the Columbus Laboratory. The two MSL versions are identical except for minor rack interface differences. Each MSL comprises a core element consisting of a sealed process chamber in which interchangeable furnace inserts are hosted. These inserts process the samples. The sample cartridges are manually loaded into one of the furnaces. The furnace can be moved over the sample cartridge to displace the thermal gradients. Diagnostic systems provide scientific data on the facility and sample cartridge during operations. As the furnaces are modular, they can be upgraded or replaced according to utilisation needs. Additional MSL units complete the accommodation and operational interfaces to the laboratory.

CONT

The MSL will be developed in two versions: Facility 1, to be accommodated within the US Laboratory Module of the International Space Station; and Facility 2, to be accommodated on board the European Columbus Laboratory. These two facilities are very similar to each other; the main differences being that the US Laboratory version of MSL is accommodated inside the NASA Materials Science Research Rack. This rack is equipped with the Active Rack Isolation System ARIS, which provides a modicum of isolation from microgravity disturbances.

The Stowage hardware consists of stowage racks, stowage lockers, stowage trays, Aisle Stowage Containers (ASCs), Resupply Stowage Platforms (RSPs), and soft stowage bags. Stowage racks consist of a rack structure, a stowage locker structure and stowage trays ... The locker structure transfers the launch and landing loads to the rack structure (rather than having the trays take the loads). Like the trays, the lockers have different heights and lengths. The sizes are such that a triple high, 34-inch long locker can accommodate different combinations of trays: a triple-high, 34-inch long tray; or 3 single-high, 34-inch long trays; or 1 double-high, 34-inch long tray and 1 single-high, 34-inch long tray; or 6 single-high, 17-inch long trays; etc.

CONT

The types of stowage racks currently being developed are the Resupply Stowage Rack (RSR), the Zero-G Stowage Rack (ZST), the Resupply Stowage Platform (RSP).

CONT

The European stowage rack is a modular stowage rack designed to accommodate payload equipment and samples in standard experiment drawers and mid-deck lockers. Power, data and thermal control resources are not provided to the stowed items.
