Environment Canada has been making use of automated surface weather observation systems since 1969, with the installation of the MARS I(Meteorological Automatic Reporting System) generation of autostations. MARS II followed in 1975, MAPS I(Modular Acquisition Processing System) in 1979 and MAPS II in 1983. The Lidar In-Space Technology Experiment(LITE) is being developed by Nasa Langley Research Center for a series of flights on the space shuttle. These disposal concepts require relatively uniform overburden media of clay, till or sand.... the overburden geology of southern Ontario is more consistent and laterally homogeneous than that of northern Ontario and, thus, offers considerably more potential for finding a technically suitable site for a LLW [low-level radioactive waste] disposal facility. The overburden of the Canadian Shield is patchy, with a considerable amount of exposed bedrock, surface water, peat bogs, etc. that are unsuitable for siting a LLW facility....
