Le deuxième problème apparaissant rapidement, fut la vitesse excessive du véhicule. Nous avons donc cherché le moyen à mettre en œuvre pour la ralentir, car nous pensions qu'en ralentissant la vitesse du véhicule, nous aurions une meilleure précision sur la distance de déplacement. La première idée venue était de diminuer la tension aux bornes du moteur propulseur, en ajoutant un potentiomètre monté en diviseur de tension. L'un des principaux défauts de ce système est le manque de précision du potentiomètre qui doit être assez gros (puissance > 0,5 Watt) pour supporter le courant important sur le moteur. Ce montage dissipait donc trop d'énergie, pour nous permettre une répétabilité des mesures.

modulating fire. Varying the firing rate as the load varies. This results in longer burner operation because the firing rate is lowered as temperature or pressure builds up toward the cutoff point. It decreases on-off operation and increases the efficiency of the system.

There are four widely used operating configurations for gas fired appliances: modulating fire, on-off, hi-low, and multi-stage firing. Modulating fire is accomplished by mechanically varying the size of the gas admittance opening of one or more special "modulating" gas valves. With the gas valve completely open the boiler fires at it’s full fire rate. The unit is said to be at "full turndown" when it fires at it’s lowest firing rate. The "turndown ratio" is the ratio of full fire rate to full turndown firing rate and is a function of boiler design. A turn down ratio of 5:1 would indicate that a boiler is capable of a full turndown firing rate of 20% (5:1 (100% fire : 20% fire).

À ce moment, après avoir obtenu le consentement de présence de flamme par l'électrode d'ionisation, la boîte de contrôle met en marche le servomoteur air-gaz qui porte le brûleur, progressivement, dans un délai préétabli, à sa puissance maximale. Le brûleur reste en ces conditions de travail jusqu'à atteindre la température maximale, après cela, toujours thermostatiquement, à l'aide du servomoteur, on stabilise la puissance à un régime minimal, jusqu'à la demande de chaleur par la chaudière, qui peut être réétablie avec une modulation successive, sans pourtant interrompre complètement le fonctionnement.

Return Flow Pressure Atomizing Oil Burner. This burner is a modification of the pressure atomizing burner; it is also called a modulating pressure atomizer. It has the advantage of wide load range for any given atomizer,... this wide range is accomplished through a return flow nozzle which has an atomizing swirl chamber just ahead of the orifice. Good atomization throughout the load range is attained by maintaining a high rate of oil flow and high pressure drop through the swirl chamber. The excess oil above the load demand is returned from the swirl chamber to the oil storage tank or to the suction of the oil pump. Control of burning rate is effected by varying the oil pressure in both the oil inlet and oil return lines. Except for the atomizer, load range, and method of control, the information given for the straight pressure atomizing burner applies to this burner.

The [freeze prevention] system is located in the aft accessory compartment and consists of a temperature control(modulating and shut-off) valve, temperature control thermostat, mufflers, and ducts. The ground operated APU is used with the left-hand pack to provide the warm air required to raise the temperature of the heat exchanger cooling air. The system taps into the APU bleed air supply duct before the check valve at the elbow under the catwalk and air is distributed by auxiliary ducts to a muffler under the flow control valve of each pack and to a single spray bar upstream of the left diverter valve. A temperature control valve in the ducting regulates the volume of bleed air to be used.
